Looking back.... MP 2007
Dogs fall in opener
GAC 14, Mary Persons 7
It wasn’t the win they’d
hoped for, but it was a vast
improvement over the 45-7
loss in 2006. Greater Atlanta
Christian came to Forsyth
Friday and got a taste of the
2007 Bulldogs. The defense
played hard, holding the
Spartans to 14 points. But
the Bullodgs made a few
costly mistakes, including
two second half turnovers.
Senior Jerandon Bussey
scored the only MP points,
taking a first quarter kick
off 83 yards.
Bouncing back
MP 40, Lamar Co. 12
Football was fun again in
Forsyth for the first time in
a while. The MP Bulldogs
took care of some unfin
ished business with the
Lamar County Trojans and
stomped them 40-12. In 48
minutes of good old-fash
ioned football the Dogs
scored five touchdowns, a
field goal and a safety. The
offense rushed for 288
yards with 10 different ball
carriers. Caleb Wilds
passed for 50 yards with
four complete passes.
Thanks to the Bulldog de
fense sacking the quarter
back nine times and 71
yards in Trojan penalties,
Lamar County had nega
tive 57 in yards rushing.
Raiders rain
down on
Bulldogs
MP 25, Northeast 30
The rain was falling so
hard at times, you could
barely see two feet in front
of you. The Bulldogs played
hard and led almost the
entire game. But a series of
mistakes, including a last-
minute fumble, which was
returned for a Northeast
touchdown, was more than
the Bulldogs could over
come. In the end, the
Bulldogs suffered their
third loss in a row to
Northeast.
The Raiders held the
Bulldogs to only 173 yards
rushing and 69 in the air.
The Dogs fumbled the ball
six times, losing it twice,
including that final blow.
Happy
Homecoming
MP 24, Southwest 7
After the disappointment
at Northeast, the Bulldogs
came back with a vegeance
against an improved South
west team to record a 24-7
homecoming victory. With
close to 300 yards rushing
and 44 yards in the air, the
Dogs played a pretty clean
game, losing only 10 yards
on one penalty.
Dogs win first
sub-region game
MP 27, Ola 3
Despite a lackluster first
quarter, the Dogs came
alive and beat an improved
Ola team, 27-3, on the
road.
Senior running back
Jerandon Bussey found
plenty of holes and aver
aged more than 10 yards a
carry, scoring two of MP’s
four touchdowns.
Quarterback Caleb Wilds
threw for 85 yards, con
necting with four different
Bulldog receivers, all for
double digit gains.
Larry Chapman led the
Bulldog defense with six
tackles and one assist
holding the Mustangs to 85
yards rushing and 125
yards passing. Sophomore
Querry Henderson snagged
his very first varsity inter
ception late in the fourth
quarter to nail the coffin
shut.
Victory on
the Hill
MP 24, Jackson 21
The Bulldogs were down
two touchdowns to the
Jackson Red Devils deep in
the second quarter, but the
Dogs refused to give up
and scored 14 points before
halftime. They added 10
more in the second half to
edge past the Red Devils
24-21 Friday night in the
annual border battle. It
was the first MP victory
over Jackson in three
years.
Jerandon Bussey rushed
for 143 yards on 18 carries
and one MP touchdown.
Quarterback Caleb Wilds
had a season-high 106
yards rushing and scored
two touchdowns.
The defense did its job
and held Jackson to less
than 50 yards total offense
in the second half and kept
them out of the endzone.
The win brings MP’s record
to 4-2 and, most important
ly, their sub-region record
to 2-0.
Four in a row
MP 28, Eagles Landing 7
Despite sloppy play,
injured players and tons
of penalty flags, MP comes
away with a needed win. It
wasn’t their best game, but
after four quarters of foot
ball, the Bulldogs remain
undefeated in sub-region
4A-AAA.
On paper the game
looked pretty much like a
runaway. The Bulldogs had
almost 300 yards of
offense. They held the win
less Eagles, the worst team
in the region, to just a lit
tle over 100 yards. They
didn’t turn over the ball.
They scored several times.
But, they also lacked the
same intesity we saw at
the Jackson game. They
played good at times and
sloppy at times. With a
total of 11 penalty flags
thrown against them, the
Bulldogs gave the Eagles
73 yards.
It’s war with
Henry County
MP 35, Henry County 41
It was a rollercoaster ride
that ended with an upset
stomach for Bulldog fans.
As the fans watched in
stunned silence Henry
County players celebrated
a 41-35 overtime win in a
wild shootout that left the
Warhawks in control of the
sub-region.
“I cannot see how we can
rush for almost 400 yards
and still lose a ballgame,”
said Coach Rodney Walker.
“But, I am extremely proud
of how our kids played.
They play very hard and
kept fighting until the end.
On the sidelines was
Jerandon Bussey, who had
been rushing for over 100
yards a game until injur
ing his knee in the Jackson
game. Also out was Justin
Abbott, who got hurt in the
Jackson game as well with
stretched ligaments in his
wrist.
Jeffry Powers, Quin King
and Meshari Walton all
stepped up and displayed
outstanding athleticism in
the game.
Playoff hopes
alive with OT
win over
Spalding
MP 21, Spalding 14
Down 14-0 with seven
minutes to play in the
game, the Bulldogs seemed
doomed to be on the road
for the region 4AAA play
offs. The team had man
aged only five first downs
and were unable to pene
trate the endzone for the
first three quarters of play.
The Jaguars virtually shut
down the running game,
allowing the Dogs only 70
yards rushing in the first
half.
“We could have folded our
arms and gave up,” said
Coach Rodney Walker.
“But, we didn’t. Those kids
kept fighting and found a
way to win.”
After three quarters of
listless play, the passing
game that had been absent
most of the season came
alive and the Bulldogs
managed to score two
touchdowns to tie the game

Payback!
MP 9, Northeast 7
For three games in a row,
the MP Bulldogs have had
to come from behind in the
fourth quarter.
Although it took the
offense over three quarters
to warm up, the defense
was strong for the entire
game. The only Northeast
score came after two long
passes in the second quar
ter. After that the Raider
offense was virtually
stopped.
“We had one of our best
games defensively,” said
Walker. “I never expected a
9-7 game. I thought we’d
have to score three touch
downs to win. I didn’t
think we could hold them
to seven points. I was
pleasantly surprised.”
The victory sent MP on
the road to face Carver-
Columbus (2-AAA) in
round one of the state
playoffs.
One and done
MP 6, Carver 46
The Bulldogs had hoped
to play David to Carver’s
Goliath, but the Tigers had
a different idea, dismantel-
ing the Dogs 46-6 in the
first round of the AAA
playoffs.
The 11-0 Tigers scored on
three of their first four pos
sessions, and scored on a
blocked punt as well, to
mount a 26-0 lead with
8:50 still left in the second
quarter. Meanwhile, the
Bulldog offense sputtered
badly. The Bulldogs fin
ished the season at 7-4.
