Senior Mustangs step into
leadership role for MA
Leading the Mustangs into battle
this year will be seniors Aaron
Purser, Adam Laney, Drew Eldridge,
Cody Cornett, Micah Gilbert,
Andrew Henriksen, Chris
Harrelson, and Micah Spivey.
Purser will lead the offense from his
quarterback position and will have
a talented running back in fellow
senior Drew Eldridge. Juniors,
Simon Colwell and Trey Epperson
will give the Mustangs a quality
group of running backs that could
give the Mustangs real kick in the
veer triple option attack.
“Our backfield could be really good
this year if they continue to
improve each practice and each
game,” says Coach Scoggins. “The
triple option is a very exciting
offense that can be very explosive.
However, it is also a high-risk
offense if our players are not
focused and execute the offense as
designed. It takes a lot of repeti
tions and experience to master the
triple option.”
The backfield could have large
holes to run in if the offensive line
develops as expected. The Mustangs
have size but are basically inexperi
enced. Senior lineman, Adam Laney
leads this group and could really be
outstanding. Fellow seniors, Micah
Spivey and Micah Gilbert add
strength, size and game experience.
Scoggins thinks that this group
can really do well.
“Learning the new offense and
blocking schemes will be a key,”
says Scoggins.
Laney, Spivey, and Gilbert anchor
the right side of the line. Scoggins
says Coach Chris Oxford has his
“hogs” working hard and expects
them to do real well.
“Coach Oxford really has taken to
his offensive and defensive line, has
them working hard and is doing a
mighty fine job,” sais Scoggins. “This
is his first time working with the
line and working with me, so we are
all on a new learning curve.”
Other linemen Scoggins expects to
lead the Mustang line is senior
Cody Cornett, juniors, Dane Adams,
Tyler Guess, Sophomores; Austin
Anderson and Colby Lewis. Lewis
and fellow sophomore Justin Laney
are currently on the injuried list.
Lewis is expected back soon, but
Justin Laney is probably out for the
season due to a boating injury prior
to practice starting.
Quarterbacks, Aaron Purser, a
senior, and sophomore Gahrett
Gaylord will have a group of talent
ed receivers to throw to including
seniors Chris Harrelson, and
Andrew Henriksen and juniors
Dean Fabian and Tommy Mills.
Freshmen Michael Howell and Cole
Faircloth are developing well
according to Scoggins.
“These guys are coming on strong”
says Scoggins. “Fabian and Trey
Sanders are tough, good hitters.
They will play both offensively and
defensively as will most of our play
ers.”
