Students catch summer reading
bug at Monroe County Library
BY AMANDA GRANT
The Monroe County Library's Vacation Reading
Program ended on Saturday, Aug. 2. The theme for the
summer was "Catch the Reading Bug!". The Library
registered 467 children into the program who read 7000
hours over the summer! More than 825 attended pro
grams and activities at the library. Weekly drawings
were held for the adults and teens. Children could earn a
variety of prizes from a free meal at Applebee's to all
sorts of toys. Children could also enter into a weekly
guessing contest to win additional prizes.
Children were entertained throughout the summer by a
host of different performers, so who were local volun
teers. Some performances included Reptile Wrangler
Ken Panse, Entertainer Tommy Johns, and a concert fea
turing Caroline and Danny.. Other programs offered at
the library were Big Bug Movie Day, a Waffle House
Waffle Party, karate lesson with the Okinowan karate
School, and Arts and Crafts days. Needless to say, it

Gordon College opens The Village
Gordon College officially opened The Village, Gordon
College’s newest resident housing complex, Aug. 1.
Robert Hatcher, vice chairman of the Board of Regents
of the University System of Georgia, was the guest
speaker. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and
tour the building immediately after.
The Village is on the east side of the 140-acre campus
near the newest resident buildings known as Commons
A, B and C. Offering housing to 400 students, it brings to
1,036 the number of apartment-style living opportunities
on the campus.
The Village also features three resident director apart
ments, one on each floor, as well as a laundry facility, a
computer lab, study area and lounge on the third floor. A
food court style dining facility is on the first floor with
both an indoor and outdoor dining area.
The building’s security features 32 cameras covering
the entrances and common areas as well as state-of-the-
art fire alarms and sprinkler systems. The building is
pre-wired for Internet access.
“We are pleased to be able to offer our students more
housing opportunities,” said Lawrence Weill, Gordon
College president. “Long gone are the square, cinder
block walls that some of us recall from our college dorm
days. These are truly apartment style residences that
offer students a place to call home in a Village atmos
phere with dedicated areas where they can study, eat,
relax and, study some more.”
Gordon College, in Barnesville, is a residential state
college of the University System of Georgia and offers
more than 80 programs of study to more than 3,700 stu
dents.
