this past Thursday at
Jane Pennington’s new
Allstate office at 57 Lee

been to a number of open house events around the state but had never seen a
reception like Thursday’s. Pennington said she appreciated the support of the
community and thanked her husband, Moses Pennington, a contractor, for do
ing the work on her new office, as well as her mother, Ruby Scandrett, for pro
viding a giant buffet for the guests. Pennington bought and renovated the for
mer residence and moved in this past May. Formerly, Allstate had been located
at 50 N. Jackson Street, now home of the Monroe County Reporter. Bottom left,

Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs After Lifestyle Changes
High-levels of cholesterol in the body may lead to
increased risk for heart attack or stroke. As result of
high cholesterol, fatty deposits may develop in blood
vessels, and lead to a narrowing of arteries. This can
cause a reduction in the delivery of oxygen-rich blood
to the heart. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also
known as “bad” cholesterol, builds up in the arteries
and causes hardening and narrowing of the arteries.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as “good”
cholesterol, retrieves excess cholesterol and returns it
to the liver. There are no signs or symptoms of high
cholesterol. A diagnosis o high cholesterol can be deter
mined by a blood text. In general, total cholesterol
should be below 200 mg/dL, LDL cholesterol should be
less than 100 mg/dL, and HDL cholesterol should be
above 50 mg/dL.
High cholesterol (above 100 mg/dL LDL or greater
than 200mg/dL total cholesterol) should first be
addressed through lifestyle changes, such as physical
activity and nutritious diet. Medications may then be
prescribed. Statin-type drugs such as simvastatin
(.Zocor) and atorvastatin (Lipitor) block a substance
necessary for the production of cholesterol by the liver.
Ezetimibe (Zetia) is a cholesterol absorption inhibitor.
