MP senior joins
Air National Guard
Kurt Van Hoy of Forsyth took the oath of mili
tary service on Aug. 26 at the Air National
Guard Recruiting station in Warner-Robins.
Kurt has signed a six-year military commit
ment to the Georgia Air National Guard; a
Reserve Component of the United States Air
Force. He was sworn into military service by
Lt. Col Ken Hanson; Senior Intelligence Offi
cer of the 116th Air Control Wing. The 116th
ACW is the only blended wing of active duty
and guardsmen in the USAF and is responsi
ble for the JSTARS mission. Kurt will attend
basic military training at Lackland AFB, TX in
the summer of 2009. He will receive follow-
on advance training in military intelligence at
Goodfellow AFB, TX that same year. Kurt is a
senior at Mary Persons High School and the
son of Master Sergeant Charles Van Hoy and
Rosetta Van Hoy of Forsyth.
Together again
Three 2001 Mary Persons graduates
were graduating together again in
June. Crystal Barkley, Fredrell Evans
and Akira Smith all received Masters
Degrees in accounting and financial
management from Keller’s Graduate
School Management on June 22.
Crystal is the daughter of George
and Ulanda Barkley. Fredrell is the
son of Mary Evans and Fred Evans.
Akira is the daughter of Gollan and
Sylvia Hatcher and Melvin Jones.
Many friends and family members
attended the ceremony. Barkley was
a graduate of distiction (honor).
Hubbard Elementary starts the year off right

Twenty attend math workshop
Twenty students attended the math workshop at the Monroe County Li
brary on July 22-23. Annie McCray, elementary school teacher, coordinat
ed and taught the workshop along with teachers who volunteered: Demet
ric Dean, Iris Mead, Mary Driscoll, Tracey Mallory. Other volunteers were
Glenda Stewart and Latara Moore. The workshop allowed the students to
sharpen their addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, number pat
terns, tally marks, fractions and geometric shapes. Mrs. McCray com
mended the students for working hard and covering the material in two
days and members of Hubbard Alumni for providing the treats for the stu
dents.
High graduates Air Force basic training
Air National Guard Airman 1st
Class Sheldon B. High has gradu
ated from basic military training at
Lackland Air Force Base, San
Antonio, Texas.
During the six weeks of training,
the airman studied the Air Force
mission, organization, and military
customs and courtesies; performed
drill and ceremony marches, and
received physical training, rifle
marksmanship, field training exer
cises, and special training in
human relations.
He is the son of Ruth High of
Forsyth.
High is a 1996 graduate of Mary
Persons High School.

the 2008 summer semester. Students
on the President's List have a grade
point average of at least 3.8 while
taking a course load of at least nine
semester hours.

for the 2008 summer semester are

Natalie Ann Dismuke and Patricia D.
Norwood of Juliette. The Dean's List
