Travelogue: Reporter in Paris
BY VICKI SMITH
Bonjour! I have been on the
vacation of a lifetime and
wanted to share some of my
adventure with you.
On July 30, my daughter
Christian, my Bolingbroke
friend Valerie Fried and I,
along with a copy of the
Reporter, flew to Paris. We
were met by Georgia friends
who are living in London. We
dropped our (too much!) lug
gage off at the flat and took off
Sleep could wait!
The first evening we were
invited to a picnic underneath
the Effiel Tower to celebrate
Valerie’s birthday. It doesn’t
get dark there until about 10
p.m. so we dined on Parisian
delicacies, wine and cham
pagne. As it got dark, we saw
the first twinkle and soon we
were treated to the most
breathtaking display of lights
as the tower fit up. I had to
pinch myself!
The next day, we walked up
the 700(!) steps to the first
landing of the Effiel Tower.
The views were breathtaking!
Later, we mastered the metro
and rode many miles under
neath the city. We enjoyed a
guided walking tour, went to
The Louvre, shopped in the
elegant Printemps depart
ment store (F.Y.I. ladies: it has
Europe’s largest shoe collec
tion), went to a flea market,
visited Sacre‘ Coeure, Notre
Dame and many other historic
churches, went on a cruise
down the Seine River and
explored the city.
Next, on to Venice! Word of
advice - if you are not travel
ing with a strong man, pack
light. It was rough getting all
our (growing) baggage into the

metro and the train station.
But we did it and settled into
an overnight sleeper car to
Italy. The next morning we
exited the train and found our
selves standing on the edge of
the Grand Canal. Ahhh.
Venice. It is magic! A floating
museum and engineering feat!
A man made environment ris
ing out of the sea with no visi
ble means of support. I reveled
in its atmosphere of elegant
decay, peeling plaster and sea
weed covered stairs. We soon
discovered that is was hot and
crowded dining the day and
would escape to Lido Island
across the lagoon via a water
taxi. Lido Island was less con
gested. We rode bikes, napped
on the beach and found cold
beverages.. .finally! I had dis
covered on my first day that
Europeans do not believe in
ice or a/c. In the evenings how
ever, Venice cools down, is
flooded with moonlight and
cranks up with Casanova
music. We would relax and
enjoy a glass of sweet Italian
wine and listen to the dueling
orchestras in St. Marks
Square.
After Venice, I was missing
home. I am a tree and green
grass kind of gal and
Bolingbroke was calling.
Sixteen hours later as I
walked out of the Atlanta air
port with Bobby and thinking
the world has many beautiful
and amazing places but there
really is no place like home!
Monroe County is a wonderful
place to call home and we are
truly blessed. It is always good
to go but even better to come
back.

44 We can count on
Monroe County Bank9?
Being a successful business depends not only on who you are and how you operate your business, but
also on those who help you with your business operations. For Ogletree Rental, our success has been
dependent on the help provided to us by the folks at the Monroe County Bank.
When Margaret and I first began we sought help from a national banking chain. We encountered
numerous problems, tons of red tape and little feedback from those who were supposed to be guiding
our fledgling business. We decided to make a local choice and approached Bill Bazemore for help. He
was there for us when we first began and is still there for us as our business grows. We rely on the
Monroe County Bank to help us be dependable and successful business women.
Mr. Bazemore and others at Monroe County Bank have always handled our business transactions
with professionalism. They have never been anything less than courteous, helpful and eager to help
us with our goals at Ogletree Rental. Monroe County Bank adheres to its mission—to help small,
locally owned businesses. As long-time Monroe County Bank customers, Margaret and I can attest
to this. In the 16 years Ogletree Rental has used the Monroe County Bank for its banking needs, we
have grown and our bank has grown with us. We can depend on them to help us become the business
we want to be and to guide us in our financial choices.
