Maynard hosts frog world series
Maynard Baptist Church’s Happy Hoppers, grades 1-5, topped off their summer of fun with the very
first Frog World Series (FWS) ball games. Two teams, the Yellow Happy Hoppers and the Green Happy
Hoppers, played each Sunday evening on the church's front lawn following devotion and prayer in the
Kids Korner. On the last night of the FWS the church family gathered on the front lawn with the ball
players and watched in delight as little and big kids alike played each other. After the game, each
player was recognized for his or her contribution, then ate hotdogs with all the trimmings. Beginning
Sept. 21, the Happy Hoppers will play kick ball on the front lawn every Sunday evening shortly after 6
p.m. for 6 weeks. All children in grades 1-5 are welcome.
God Rush to be re-scheduled
God Rush, a community-wide prayer
service for Monroe County's students,
teachers and administrators, will be
rescheduled. The planning session for the
prayer service will be at Maynard Baptist
Church, 1195 Juliette Road, at 7:30 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 29. Every church that is
interested in participating needs to send
at least one member to represent your
church in planning this event. Churches
are also asked to provide material about
their church or a table set up at the serv
ice to provide church information.
Community service organizations are
also welcome to meet and participate in
the event. The service will be held at Dan
Pitts Stadium at Mitchell Field. An alter
nate plan will be made in case of rain.
The event was originally planned for Aug.
27 but had to be postponed due to bad
weather. The mission of God Rush is to
give God the glory for what He has
already done in the Forsyth-Monroe
County community.

Preaching has always
been controversial and
the church has always
had problems with
preachers. It’s a crying
shame. The apostle Paul
was always dealing with
preachers. In Philippians
he writes: “Some pro

from goodwill...the others
proclaim Christ out of
selfish ambition, not sin

In this election year,
however, I don’t see how
“Christ is proclaimed in
every way.” These media-

cult for the 99 percent of
the preachers in America
who “proclaim Christ” to
do their jobs. They trivial
ize the preaching event
and the kingdom of God.
Rather than drawing peo

words and deeds that flow
into our households via
television, print and

the gospel they
once were called
to preach.
There are many
problems in our
world today. We
live in a time of
gigantic evil.
Throughout the
world there is
homelessness,
' i'.' i famine and

threat of war.
It is hopeless to think of
combating it by any other
means than that of sanc
tity. To think of overcom
ing such evil by material
means, by military
actions and armaments,
by changes in the societal
order only—all this is
utterly hopeless. We need
God’s help and we need to
seek and invoke the prov
idence of God into our
lives, which is the call of a
pastor.
Robert McAfee Brown,
Stanford scholar, theolo
gian and strong advocate
for peace and justice
issues, once offered this
advice to preachers: “My
own penchant in this
regard has been to tilt
toward social-justice
issues...By looking into
people’s faces, I discov
ered that I’m not faithful
to the gospel if I preach
only judgment and social
concern week after
week... Most of the con
gregation are hurting and
need support and comfort,
not an unwavering diet of
chastisement... Arousing
denunciation of the Gulf
War isn’t necessarily
what a couple needs when
they’ve just learned that
their daughter has cancer.
Every week some wor
shipers are hurting and
some are exultant; some
have lost their jobs and
some are aflame with the
need for justice in the
workplace.”
This is a call for preach
ers, whether prophetic
preachers or pastoral
ones, to consider the value
of sanctity. It’s a call for
preachers to look at their
feet. Paul says, quoting
the Old Testament, that
those who preach the
good news have beautiful
feet. Until our feet get
beautiful, it’s best just to
keep them out of public.

Please Elect
Karen K. Martin
for District Attorney
I would like to thank all the voters who supported me in the
primary election. Hopefully even more of you will see fit to back me
in the upcoming general election.
It has been my experience that in election years candidates are
long on promises and short on deliveries. But let me assure you that
if I am elected to the office of District Attorney in the Towaliga
Circuit, there are two promises I will make and keep.
First, my office will be a hard-working office. I believe in hard
work and take pride in going the “extra mile”. I intend to hire only
assistants who share that philosophy.
Second, I am dedicated to the concept that the law should apply
equally to all. Who you are does not impress me- being a law-abiding
citizen does.
It is my belief that any office can profit from listening to the opin
ions of informed citizens. If I am elected, my door will always be
open to you.
