with their uniform top on.
Lady Mustangs:
Slugging ahead
The Monroe Academy softball team has come
a long way since the beginning of the season.
Only seven games into the season, the softball
team has come closer to a victory each time.
Last week, the Lady Mustangs faced Oak
Mountain on Monday with a final score of 1-2.
Only losing by one run two days before, the
Lady Mustangs came out for a win on
Thursday as they played Randolph Southern.
The game was tied 2-2 until the fourth inning
but took a lick in the fifth inning as the other
team scored six runs.
The Mustangs struggled to catch up but
ended the game 9-4. Outstanding players that
scored for the Mustangs included seniors,
Autumn Duckworth, Cristina Soto and fresh
man, Leah Barlow. The Lady Mustangs will
host Fullington Academy and Crisp Academy
next Tuesday and Thursday.

Volleydogs host play day fundraiser
The Mary Persons Volleydogs
will be hosting a play-day Satur
day. The teams all play each
other once in “round-robin”
style. It's also a fundraiser for
the volleyball team. Tickets are
$5 at the gate and students get
in for $3 if they wear an MP Bull
dog shirt or have a student ID.
There is a concession stand and
MP t-shirts will be on sale. The
teams involved are MP, Baldwin,
Luella, Eastside and Carver,
Columbus.
Chamber golf tournament cancelled
The Chamber of Commerce has can- sors and their need for return on invest
celled its annual golf tournament,
planned for Monday, Oct. 6.
“We are having a hard time attracting
enough teams to the tournament to
make it a profitable event,” said Tiffany
Andrews, president and CEO of the
Chamber. “We are sensitive to our spon-
ment. We are exploring other opportuni
ties with our sponsors.”
The Forsyth-Monroe County Chamber
of Commerce is a non-profit member
supported organization that supports
the local business community and fos
ters economic growth.
MP Dogs
continued from IB
right back on their first
play again. This time it
was Tevin Davis who fell
on the ball for the
Bulldogs. MP made it all
the way to the 1-yard line
before Cory Nash fumbled
the ball right back to the
Hornets, who took full
advantage and scored with
2:25 to play in the half. MP
remained on top 20-14, but
it was getting closer.
After an 11-yard kick-off
return by Redding, King
carried the ball five times
to the endzone for his third
touchdown of the game.
Tevin Davis scored the
two-point conversion. MP's
defense held the Hornets
and went into the locker
room leading 28-14 at the
half.
The Bulldog defense held
strong throughout the
third quarter. Meanwhile,
Walton scored his second
touchdown, widening the
gap, 35-14. Walton scored
again with 9:41 remaining
on the game clock before
Walker began to substitute
for the starters.
South Atlanta managed
one more score, but it was
too little, too late and the
Hornets were sent home.
Coach Rodney Walker
says he’s pleased with the
way the Bulldogs played. “I
thought we did some good
things. The offense played
better and more disci
plined,” said Walker. As for
any special top-secret
preparations for the
Jackson game, Walker
won’t say. “We’re practici-
ing the same as usual,”
says Walker.
Running back Jeffry
Powers, who suffered a dis
located elbow on the first
play of the first game of
the season, may be back
for the big rivalry game.
Powers practiced on
Monday, but Walker is
unsure whether he will
play Friday night.
“That will be a game time
decision,” said Walker.

The junior varsity
Bulldogs are also prepar
ing to play Jackson this
week. The JV Dogs are 1-1
so far this season. They
won their first contest of
the year, 14-10 over Pike
County. But the JV
Bulldogs dropped game 2
to Central 22-8.

The C-team is also 1-1 on
the season so far. The C-
team Bulldogs won their
first game against Gray
Station 18-10 at home. The
defense played well and
Dee Brown broke for a 74-
yard kickoff return to put
the Bulldogs ahead late in
the fourth quarter to win
the game. Jordan Banks
picked off a pass off when
Gray Station threatened
late in the game on the MP
30 yard line and returned
it to the Gray Station 15
where the Bulldogs scored
to finish the game.
The c-team lost 12-0 to
Crawford last week. “Our
defense allowed to touch
downs but our offense
could never get on track,”
said Coach Harvey
Appling. “We are a young
team this year.”
The c-team plays Clifton
Ridge Wednesday at home.
Kick-off is at 5 p.m. Clifton
Ridge is undefeated.
