Helena Elizabeth Graves Abare
June 17,1920 - October 3,2008
Helena Elizabeth Graves “Ding” Abare, 88, of Forsyth,
passed away at Regency Hospital in
Macon on Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, after a
long illness. y J
Mrs. Abare was born in Orange,
Va. on June 17, 1920, and graduat
ed from Miami Beach High
School, where she was an out
standing athlete in basketball.
She was selected to play on a U.S.
basketball team in competition that
would later be named the Pan
American Games, but she contracted yel
low fever and was unable to participate in the competi
tion.
Mrs. Abare worked as a model and appeared on the
cover of a pilot issue of Life magazine. During WWII,
she worked in a factory in Ohio that manufactured
bombs for B-17s, the plane that her husband flew during
the war. After the war, she worked as an airline stew
ardess before taking on the responsibility of raising five
children.
An avid golfer, Mrs. Abare was a member of the Ladies
Golf Association at Riverside Country Club in Macon.
She was also a member of the Georgia Women’s Golf
Association and played competitively in tournaments in
Georgia. She also competed in pistol shooting for more
than 20 years and won more than 100 competitions.
In 1980, Mrs. Abare invented an ice pack product,
which is sold under the label of Attach-A-Pak, and she
served as CEO, secretary, and treasurer of the company
until her death. She and her husband were members of
the Forsyth Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Abare is preceded in death by her loving and
devoted husband of 66 years, William T. Abare, and by
her daughter, Elizabeth Randolph Abare of Macon.
She is survived by four children: William T. Abare, Jr.
(wife Susan) of St. Augustine, Fla., Kim Graves Abare
(wife Molly) of Jonesboro, Cary Carter Taylor Eisnor
(husband Rick Eisnor) - St. Augustine, Fla., and Robin
Lee Abare of Forsyth; grandchildren, Katherine T. Abare,
William T. Abare III, Justin H. Abare, Jefferson C. Taylor,
Carlee B. Taylor, Christina L. Eisnor, Ericka A. Eisnor,
Kim G. Abare, Jr., and Kristen L. Ramsey; great- grand
children, Julia Owensby, Will Abare, Mason Abare,
William Ramsey, and Maxwell Abare.
A graveside service was held Sunday, Oct. 5 at Monroe
Hills Memorial Gardens cemetery in Forsyth. In lieu of
flowers, the family suggests memorials to Forsyth
Presbyterian Church, PO Box 539, Forsyth, GA 31029.

Lareeta Cater Davis
August 14,1925 - September 29,2008
Lareeta Cater Davis died Monday, Sept.
29, 2008. Funeral services were held
Friday, Oct. 3 at Forsyth Presbyterian
Church with burial in Forsyth City
Cemetery. (Ret.) Chief Justice Harold
G. Clarke and Mrs. Davis’s grandchil
dren conducted the services.
Mrs. Davis, the daughter of the late
Robert Lawton and Anne Ree Gamble
Cater, was born August 14, 1925 in Monroe
County. Her husband, Richard “Dick” Earle Davis, Sr.
preceded her in death. Mrs. Davis attended Bessie Tift
College and Wesleyan College and was a graduate of the
University of Miami. Mrs. Davis taught for several years
at Monroe County Academy and Mary Persons High
School. She was a member of Forsyth Presbyterian
Church where she served as a church Elder, taught a
Sunday School Class and was in charge of Vacation Bible
School for many years. She was a former Cub Scout Den
Mother, former board member of the Macon Rescue
Mission. Mrs. Davis was one of the founding original
board members and past president of Circle of Care and
a member of the Forsyth Woman’s Book Club. She was a
former Gray Lady and Pink Lady now known as the
Monroe County Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the
Pregnancy Center of Monroe County, a member of the
Merry Hearts and a member of the CFO. Mrs. Davis was
a former Chairperson of the Judicial Citizen Review
Panel of Monroe County from 1991 to 2005, to insure
permanency for foster children. Mrs. Davis served her
community and received numerous awards including the
Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds in 1987, which was
awarded to both Lareeta and Dick, jointly, for their com
mitment to several worthwhile organizations that helped
people. She was a former owner of a Christian Book
Store.
Survivors include her children, Captain Richard E.
Davis, Jr. USN (ret) and wife Jane, of Gulf Breeze,
Florida, Dr. Lawton Cater Davis and wife Dr. Diane
Davis, of Dublin, Georgia, and Mark Nelson Davis of
Forsyth, six grandchildren and three great grandchil
dren.

Dr. I. W. Bowen, III, of Forsyth gradu
ated from the school of physical life
on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008. He was 82
years of age. Born on September
12, 1926, he was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Irwin W. Bowen, Jr., of
Brookfield, Ga. His parents pre
ceded him in death.
Burial will be private preceding
the memorial celebration, which
will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday,
Oct. 8 at First Baptist Church of Forsyth.
The family will greet friends from 6 until 8 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Monroe County Memorial Chapel.
Dr. Bowen was educated in the Tifton Public Schools,
graduating from Tifton High School in 1943. He was a
graduate of Mercer University, receiving his A.B.
degree in 1946. Graduate work was done at Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary where in 1949 he
received the Master of Divinity degree and in 1952 the
Doctor of Philosophy diploma. That same year he mar
ried Nell Elizabeth Tyner of Augusta. They were mar
ried for 56 years.
He is survived by his wife, Nell, and his children, Dr.
Paul T. Bowen and wife Barbara of Lawrenceville, and
Brenda Neisler and husband Dr. Deck E. Neisler of
Lilburn; grandchildren Ashlea, Nick, Ty, Ellyn, Andrew
and Justin.
Dr. Bowen was ordained as a minister by the First
Baptist Church in Camilla on June 26, 1949. He was
serving that church as a youth minister upon the com
pletion of his work at Mercer. For 28 years he was the
chairman of the Department of Religion at Tift College.
In 1980 he became the pastor of the First Baptist
Church in Barnesville, a position he held for 11 years.
In 1991 he retired for a short period of time until he
became the pastor of the Rocky Creek Baptist Church
in Forsyth where he served for 14 years. In addition he
served the Russellville Baptist Church the first five
years he was at the college and the Shiloh/Lamar
Baptist Church for three years. Dr. Bowen also served
numerous churches as supply minister and over 33
churches as interim pastor.
He served as the first instructor in the Weekend
Bible Institute Program of the Ga. Baptist Convention
for over 30 years. In addition he was a popular instruc
tor of the Winter Bible Study sponsored by the
Southern Baptist Convention. He was a Bible
Conference leader at the State Gideon Convention, the
Woman’s Missionary Union camps, and at the
Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly. Dr. Bowen participated
in mission trips to Alaska, Panama, Germany, and the
Philippines. He was also a popular instructor for the
Safety Driver Program for Senior Citizens sponsored
by the AARP. He taught over 65 classes with a total of
nearly 2,000 students.
On two different years he served as the First Vice
President of the Ga. Baptist Convention. He has
received several awards for his service to the
Convention, to Tift College, and to Mercer University.
He and Mrs. Bowen have established the Bowen-Tyner
Scholarship Fund for the Tift College of Education of
Mercer.

made to the Bowen-Tyner Scholarship Fund for the
Tift College of Education of Mercer, Mercer University

One year ago October 9, 2007, an angel was dispatched to
carry HOMER CLARENCE LYONS, SR., home to be with
the Lord.
Ms. Virginia Lyons his wife, his children Wanda, Nikki,
