Around Monroe County
Early detection
key to surviving
breast cancer
The Monroe County
Leadership Council of the
American Cancer society is
working hard again to pro
mote early detection of
breast cancer during
October. Following the lead
of the American Cancer
Society (ACS) the local
group is working to encour
age women to do self
exams and mammograms.
Research is overwhelm
ing that breast cancer
detected before symptoms
occur is more easily treat
able. Recent research has
also provided tests that
make it possible to avoid
chemotherapy and/or radi
ation. Breast cancers that
are detected after they are
causing symptoms tend to
be larger and may have
spread. This means that
the treatment will of
necessity be more severe.
The American Cancer
Society urges all women to
begin having an annual
mammograms at age 40.
Many doctors also encour
age a monthly self exam.
At least 30 percent of all
breast cancers that are
treated are the result of
breast self examination.
Women need also to con
sider the risk factors.
While all women should
have annual screening, it
is very urgent that those
with a history of breast
cancer get screened every
year. Women who have a
close blood relative that
has had breast cancer are
at high risk for the disease.
Other risk factors include
age; smoking or drinking;
being overweight; and
African American women.
The two greatest risk fac
tors for breast cancer can
not be controlled. These
two factors are being a
woman and getting older.
While most cancers are
detected in women over 40,
the news is not all bad.
Early detection almost
always assure successful
treatment.

breast cancer call 1-800-
