Third Bulldog
lo ss dampens
playoff hopes
Woodward 28, MP 9
BY GINA HERRING
Looks like Mary Persons
Bulldog fans will have to
settle for another mediocre
football season. Hopes of a
home playoff game were
crushed Friday night as
the Dogs lost to the
Woodward Academy War
Eagles, 28-9.
"We were outplayed,"
said Coach Rodney Walker.
"We got beat.”
Jeffry Powers led the
offense with 105 yards on
26 carries. Quarterback
Drew Coleman completed
13 of 23 pass attempts for
84 yards, but was inter
cepted twice and sacked
four times. The Bulldogs
also squandered two
opportunities to score deep
in Woodward territory.
Woodward struck first,
marching down the field to
score on its first posses
sion in less than two min
utes..
On their first
possession, the
Dogs trudged to
the Woodward 34-
yard line, but
couldn't convert on
third and 8. The
punt return was
fumbled by
Woodward and
recovered by
Marcus Lucas at
the War Eagle 20-
yard line. On third
and 8, Coleman
connected with
Chris Bowden for
the lone MP touch
down of the game.
James Brooks
tacked on the
extra point and
the game was tied
at 7-7 with 5:37 to
play in the first
quarter.
But it was all
down hill from
there for the
Bulldogs. MP's
defense failed to stop the
Woodward offense and the
War Eagles went ahead to
start the second quarter,
14-7.
MP turned the ball over
on downs at the Woodward
22-yard line on its next
possession. But, the War
eagles remained ahead at
the half.
Woodward would score
again in the third and its
defense held the Bulldogs
inside the MP 35 on the
next two Bulldog posses
sions.
As the fourth quarter
began, Woodward was on
top 21-7.
Moments later,
Woodward added another
score and led 28-0 with
10:51 to go in the game.
MP pushed forward., but
turned the ball over on
downs on fourth and 14 at

Volleydogs sweet 16... again
For the third year in a row, under
Coach Lori Greene, the Mary
Persons Lady Volleydogs have fin
ished Sweet Sixteen in the state
playoffs.
On Saturday, the ladies traveled to
Madison to compete against Burke
in the first round. The Volleydogs
won in a best 3-out-of-5 match, 26-
24,25-11, 25-15.
Next, they took on the number-one
team in the state, St. Pius X, losing
10-25, 13-25, 6-25.
Leading all hitters was Beneidra
Colbert with 25 spikes, 2 kills, 7
dinks. Kendra Head added 19
spikes, 6 dinks, 1 block, and Ciera
Davis came through with 18 spikes,
1 kill, 1 dink, and 2 blocks. Leading
service scorers were: Keri Walker
23 points, Ciera Davis 22 points,
and Shardai Mundy 19 points.
Shardai also led the team in dinks
with 7, and sets with 74.
“I am very proud of what the girls
accomplished this year,” said
Greene. “They practiced all summer
and worked hard during the season
to make themselves better.”
Volleyball is growing all over the
state and MP volleyball is doing
what they need to do to stay in the
game. "We've had a great three-
year run, with an Area
Championship, two area runner-
ups, and three trips to state, finish
ing in the ‘Sweet 16’ each time,"
said Greene.
Get ‘Zapped’
Look for specially-marked “Zap” bags prior to the MP
games against Spalding Friday night. The Mary Persons
Touchdown Club will be selling the special limited edi
tion Zapareo Glover #40 souvenir footballs Oct. 31. The
Touchdown Club is helping other concerned citizens with
this fund raiser. Only a few of these special footballs
remain and are available for donations of $5 and $10. All
proceeds will go into the account the Touchdown Club
has set up to help defer Zapareo’s medical expenses.
Former MP football player Zapareo Glover was wounded
in a carjacking in August and remains paralyzed.
