Trio
continued from the front page
The company laid off 27 employees in
January, keeping only one shift of 17
workers. But Newton said work orders
have continued to dwindle.
“We have no customers,” said Newton.
Newton said the company will pay its
employees severance packages as they
begin looking for new jobs.
“We’re digging into our reserves to do it
but it’s the right thing to do,” said
Newton.
Newton said he will be looking for work
as well.
“We’ve done everything we could. We’re
very modern. We have reinvested in our
plant,” Newton had told the Reporter in
January. “We had one customer tell us
even if we gave them the yarn, they could
buy the finished product from India
cheaper than they could convert it into a
product here.”
When it was pointed out that Trio lasted
longer than a lot of textile plants in the
South, Newton said that was little solace.
“It’s not comforting when you’re losing
your business and displacing these won
derful people,” said Newton.
Newton said the company will begin an
orderly liquidation, hopefully selling its
valuable equipment and machinery. He
said he’s not sure what they’ll do with
their commercial buildings downtown,
though some are already leased. He said
they’ll continue to rent the homes in the
Trio village, built for the families of Trio
workers.
Trio revenues began to decline in 2001
and stagnated until the end of 2007, when
several of the company’s largest cus
tomers decided to close their U.S. opera
tions and source finished products from
overseas - primarily India and Brazil,
Newton said.
Trio Manufacturing Company was
founded by three local men, J.W. Newton,
R.R Brooks and C.A. English and opened
on May 24, 1899. The primary building, 94
E. Adams Street in Forsyth, was used as
an ammunition depot during the Civil
War. In 1910 Ensign sold his share of the
company, followed by Brooks in 1917. A
member of the Newton family has served
as president of the company since then.
Ham to send jury questions
In the next few weeks,
the Jury Commission for
Monroe County will be
mailing out 1000 question
naires to citizens of
Monroe County in an effort
to find additional qualified
potential jurors for the
Monroe County Superior
Court. Monroe County’s six
member jury commission
appointed by the Chief
Judge of the Towaliga
Circuit is responsible for
creating and maintaining a
jury list for the court that
reflects a balanced cross
section of the community
in percentages found on
the latest official census.
Under Georgia law, Lynn
Ham, Clerk of Monroe
Superior Court, serves as
clerk for the jury commis
sion. She urges citizens
who receive a question
naire to complete the form
and return it to her office
within 10 days of receipt. A
random selection method
was used to compile a list
of persons for this mail
out. If you did not receive a
juror questionnaire this
time or have never com
pleted a jury questionnaire
you may come by the
Clerk’s Office in the
Courthouse Monday thru
Friday 8a.m. to 5 p.m. to
complete a juror question
naire form for submission
to the jury commission.
Mrs. Ham goes on to say
that trial by jury is one of
the constitutional rights
that we enjoy as citizens of
the republic in which we
are blessed to live. Unlike
in may other countries, all
persons in the United
States are entitled to be
judge by a jury of their
peers when charged with
criminal wrongdoing or
when having civil issues
that need to be decided in
a court of law. Jury service
is an honor and a responsi
bility made possible as the
result of the sacrifice of
millions of Americans who
have fought and died to
preserve our system of jus
tice.
Ham states that whether
or not you are selected to
serve as a trial juror, you
are making an invaluable
contribution by your avail
ability and willingness to
serve. If selected to serve
as a juror, you become an
active participant in the
administration of justice.
You should view this
responsibility as one of the
most important civic duties
that you will ever be called
upon to serve.

BARBARA STARR
BASWELL
TAX COMMISSIONER
Under the direction of Barbara Baswell, and the finance department, along with
the county commissioners, the money the County has borrowed for operational
purposes for numerous years has been eliminated. Finances have been
controlled and the county is in better financial shape than the previous 20
years. Mrs. Baswell, and her 30 plus years of accounting experience, was instru
mental in obtaining this accomplishment. Not having to borrow this money for
operations will provide additional funds for the county in lieu of making interest
payments next year.
Her leadership as the County Clerk and as the Chief Financial Officer, along
with her years of experience in the accounting field, will ensure excellent
service to the taxpayers of Monroe County as the next Tax Commissioner.
Your vote for Barbara Starr Baswell will lead Monroe County and its growth on
a positive road to success.
