The main courthouse entrance is now now on this, the north side.
BY WILL
DAVIS
Citizens must
now enter the
Monroe County
courthouse
through the
doors on the
north side
across from
Grits Cafe, and
no longer the
south side.
County offi
cials moved the
courthouse’s
main entrance
Monday, Oct. 20.
Crews had
ripped out the
old handicap
ramp at the
courthouse’s
south entrance and also
ripped out the remaining
bushes. Workers also
poured concrete for the new
walkway that encircles the
courthouse, as well as a pad
for the war memorial on
the southeast corner of the
square. The new handicap
ramp is on the courthouse’s
east side and wheelchair
users can press a call but
ton to gain entry from the
east side.
The courthouse renova
tions committee met last
week to discuss the
timetable for the project,
said probate judge Karen
Pitman. On Monday, crews
spread dirt on the lawn to
even out the yard. The com
mittee is ordering about
three red or white oak trees
that will be 20 or 30 feet
tall, said Pitman.
Meanwhile, the hardwood
floors in the main court
room are done and benches
were put back in the court
room on Monday for elec
tion night. New cushions
will be put in the benches.
The committee also voted
to install a new air condi
tioning and heating system
in the main courtroom.
That, said Pitman, will
allow them to remove the
big unit that’s an eyesore
above the courthouse’s east
entrance.
The committee also plans
to put carpet runners in the
courtroom to reduce the
noise, and plans to ask the
DOT about improving sig
nage around the square.
The committee would also
like to see the city get the
decorative antique poles for
street lights like they have
in Barnesville and
Monticello. The city is look
ing at that possibility
through its Streetscape
plans. Pitman said the side
walk around the courthouse
also needs improvement.
Pitman said they hope to
have most of the courthouse
work done by Christmas.

An article in the Oct. 29 Reporter, "County
mourns Karl Hill," should have said that
George Mettler is a former FBI agent, not a
retired FBI agent. Also, Mettler said it was
Karl Hill that teased him that he would write
a book with him as a character. Mettler
responded that he wasn't a good enough
writer to make a character out of him that
readers would believe.
Finally, after watching Game 1 of the
World Series that Wednesday, Mettler said
he reminded Hill to return for Game 2
Thursday night. But Hill said he didn't want
to see two games in a row, and said he
would come out on Saturday afternoon to
watch the Georgia game. Mettler told him
not to forget all of the ice cream and the
unopened wine he had brought, but Hill said
keep it all and they would start using them
on Saturday. Then at the door he hugged
him and referred to their friendship. "I never
saw him again," said Mettler.
