Elementary school district plan for 2009 unveiled BY GINA HERRING The Monroe County school board last Tuesday released its plan to divide the county into three elementary school districts as it adds the new K.B. Sutton Elementary School in August 2009. The new districts put the east side of the county in the Hubbard district, while the north and northwest section will go to K.B. Sutton. The west and southwest area, includ ing Bolingbroke and Smarr, will attend T.G. Scott. No action was taken, however. The board opted to allow par ents to see the proposed district maps, ask ques tions and make com ments. According to superin tendent Anthony Pack, the districts were cre ated based on popula tion density and the number of students who receive free or reduced lunch. “That is important because it’s how Title I schools are deter mined,” said Pack. Title I was enacted in 1965 and provides federal funds to help ensure that all chil dren, even those who may be economically disadvantaged, have a fair, equal, and signifi cant oppor tunity to obtain a high-quality education. “It’s impor tant to that all three schools See DISTRICTS page 7A The proposed elementary school district map shows students on the west side of the county will go to Hubbard, the southeast corner to T.G. School board postpones building fine arts center BY GINA HERRING The Monroe County school board has put plans for a fine arts center on hold for now. The proposed auditorium, estimat ed to cost $4.1 million, is sched uled to be built on the Mary Persons campus and was part of the wish list for the special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) passed last year. The board bonded $15 million to build K.B. Sutton Elementary School and the fine arts center. However, over $12.1 mil lion has been committed to Sutton, leaving them short. According to assistant superintendent Jackson Daniel, the school system expects to receive over $2 million between now and March from the current SPLOST. But, the board says the priority needs to be on the things that need fixing right now. Among See FINE ARTS page 2A
