Five local restaurants
receive Foodie nods
Vote for Monroe County restaurants at www.maconfood.com
BY GINA HERRING
Could the best pizza in
Middle Georgia be right
here in Forsyth? Some
think so. Jonah's on
Johnston, less than a year
after opening, has been
nominated for a Foodie
award for the best pizza in
Middle Georgia.
The Foodies are the
annual awards handed out
by Macon's Food and
Culture magazine to
restaurants in the middle
Georgia area. This is
Jonah's first nomination.
Four other restaurants in
Monroe County, Grits Cafe
and the Royal Palm Cafe
in Forsyth, the Red Tomato
in Bolingbroke and the
Whistle Stop Cafe in
Juliette have also been
nominated.
Jonah’s owner Bonnie
Barker says it is an honor
to be considered so soon.
Jonah's opened on E.
Johnston street on Dec. 14,
2007. Each pizza starts
with made-from-scratch
hand-tossed dough and is
topped with one of four
sauces and a variety of
cheeses and toppings.
Some of their specialty piz
zas include the California,
which has green sauce and
goat cheese and the
Hawaiian pizza with red
sauce, pineapple and ham.
They also offer traditional
toppings.
Word of Jonah's pizzas
spread quickly and it soon
became one of the most
popular dining spots in
Forsyth.
"Our catch phrase, 'the
best you ever had' actually
came from customers
telling us it was the best
pizza they'd ever had,"
says Barker. The Jonah's
staff makes about 60 piz
zas a day, more on week
ends. She says the key is
fresh ingredients, really
good recipes, great sauces
and the crew's dedication
to quality.
Jonah's is up against
both Ingleside Pizza loca
tions in Macon, as well as
Atlas Pizza and Allen's
Stone-Baked Pizza, both in
Warner Robins.
But, Jonah's isn't the
only Monroe County
restaurant nominated for a
Foodie. Of the 18 different
categories, six contain
Monroe County restau
rants.
Grits Cafe has four nomi-

nations, including best
atmosphere, best waitstaff,
best place for fine dining
and owner Wayne
Wetendorf is nominated for
best chef. The Red Tomato
in Bolingbroke is also list
ed as a fine dining nomi
nee and chef Michael
Falduti is up for best chef.
The Red Tomato also has a
nomination for best neigh
borhood restaurant. The
odds are in Monroe
County’s favor for winning
best chef. A third nominee
in that category is David
White, the chef at the
Royal Palm (who is also
now moving to Monroe
County with his family).
The Whistle Stop Cafe in
Juliette is nominated for
best southern cuisine.

for write-in
candidates
They didn’t win any
offices on Nov. 4, but a few
write-in candidates did
draw some votes in Monroe
County.
For president, Monroe
County voters gave Chuck
Baldwin, the nominee for
the Constitutional Party,
eight votes.
Perennial presidential
candidate Ralph Nader got
four votes and Green Party
nominee Cynthia
McKinney garnered one
vote.
In the U.S. senate race,
William Salomone, a long
time Roswell resident and
city council watchdog, got
one vote.
Monroe County voters
also submitted names for
write-in candidates in
other races. However, elec
tion superintendent Karen
Pitman said she’s already
sealed the ballots and can
not retrieve the names of
those receiving write-in
votes. Reporter cartoonist
Wilhelm Neal Esquire's
lobbying for write-in votes
for sheriff did garner him a
few votes for sheriff, said
Pitman.
