Fire did major damage to
a Boxankle Road home
around noon on
Wednesday, Dec. 3.
According to Shane Cook,
spokesman for the Monroe
County Emergency
Services, county firefight
ers responded to a 911 fire
call from a neighbor who
saw smoke coming from
the home about lunchtime.
The homeowner is Glen
Staples and he was renting
it to his son.
The first arriving fire
fighters reported heavy
black smoke coming from
the side windows of the
house. Firefighters
entered the home and bat
tled intense smoke, heat
and fire for some time,
before gaining the upper
hand and finally extin
guishing the flames.
Firefighters were able to
keep the fire contained to
the one side of the house,
said Cook. The residents,
who were not home at the
time of the fire, were noti
fied at work by emergency
personnel. Fortunately,
they do have renter’s and
homeowners’ insurance,
said Cook. The son is living
with family members while
the fire is being probed.
It is still unclear at
presstime how the fire
started. “We are still in the
process of investigating the
cause of the fire,” said fire
investigator Jason Lott.

ter house while he was
emoving personal property,
ihe said she and the sus-
iect were separated and
he had asked him to leave.
Vhen he left, the victim

ieen given to her by the
uspect, was gone. She said
he contacted the suspect
,nd he denied having it.
according to her, he said
he dog may have gotten
ut of the house and run
way. The victim admitted
hat the dog would run off
mless it was on a leash,
iut thought he still had it.
She was advised to con-
act the magistrate court.
Suspect hides
marijuana, pipe in
sweatshirt
At 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 26,
police had a check point on
Hwy. 41 at the Corvette
shop when they saw a van
swerve in its lane and stop
twice before reaching the
check point. The van had no
other car in front of it and
was hesitant about
approaching the police. The
driver seemed to be nervous
and denied stopping in the
road. He said he wasn't hid
ing anything in the car and
gave police permission to
search it. A sweatshirt was
found in the car containing
a clear bag of marijuana
and a brass pipe. The driver
was allowed to leave and
further action will be taken
at a later date.
Man denies
drinking, later gets
arrested for DUI
At 10:26 p.m. on Nov. 26,
Cpl. Brown stopped a Jeep
Liberty for speeding on I-
75. There was a strong odor
of alcohol coming from the
driver, but he denied drink
ing. He tested positive for
alcohol consumption and
failed sobriety tests. He was
arrested and transported to
the Monroe County Jail,
where he blew a .096 dur
ing the breathalyzer test.

ing, DUI and driving on a
suspended license.
Burglar bogs down
in back yard
At 8:43 a.m. on Nov. 29, a
complainant said someone
had entered his father's
house and taken several
items. A Nissan was found
at the rear of the house and
was stuck in the yard due
to heavy rains. The car was
loaded with the items from
the house and was towed to
the Monroe County Sheriffs
impound lot. The house was
entered by removing a win
dow air conditioner and the
suspects had rambled
through the house as if
looking for valuables. The
house is currently not occu
pied and the victim lives
with the complainant. The
complainant said he checks
the house monthly and the
last time he checked it was
the first of November. The
items in the car were placed
back in the house. Several
medicine bottles were found
in the car with the car
owner's name on them. A
witness said a woman had
gotten the car stuck there
the previous night when
she went back there to
sleep and sober up from
drinking. The witness didn't
see anyone else but noticed
several items in the truck
and called the complainant
about possible theft. A
woman was seen walking
north on the interstate but
she was not found. The
woman had given the wit
ness a name and address.
Police tried making contact
with the suspect, but it was
not the correct phone num
ber. Dispatch was able to
contact a woman who said
the car belonged to her hus
band. Supposedly the
woman’s husband had left
on Nov. 28 and she hadn’t
seen him since.
Six guns, $1,000
stolen from home
At 6:56 p.m. on Dec. 1,
deputy T. Daniels was dis
patched to Klopfer Road
where the complainant said
someone had kicked in the
back door and stolen six
guns and a small blue safe
containing important
papers and $1,000 in
cash.The complainant said
he only had one serial num
ber and would go to the
place where he purchased
the guns to get the other
numbers. He was advised to
contact to the Sheriff’s
office if he found anything
else missing or found the
other serial numbers.
Car completely
destroyed by fire
At 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 4,
Deputy C. Miller was dis
patched to the area of Dixie
Drive off of Hwy. 87 in ref
erence to a car fire. Upon
Miller’s arrival, several
Monroe County firefighters
were extinguishing a car
that had been completely
destroyed by fire. It
appeared the car had been
abandoned and set on fire
by unknown occupants.
Miller had the 911 center
contact the Macon Police
Department, Bibb County
Sheriff’s office and Jones
County Sheriff’s office to
ask about any reports of
stolen vehicles. All three
departments said they had
no reports of stolen cars as
of that date. Miller told the
911 center to have a wreck
er get the car after daylight
to give it time to cool off
due to extreme heat.

Juliette mom warns neighbors to be leery
A Juliette mother is
warning area residents to
keep a watchful eye out for
possible suspicious preda
tors in the area.
Suzanne Swansea said
her 12-year-old son, Seth,
was waiting for the bus
last Tuesday morning at
the end of their driveway
on Hwy. 87 when a red
Ford SUV entered their
driveway. Swansea said her
son came running back to
the house, afraid it was
someone up to no good. The
SUV then re-entered Hwy.
87 and resumed going in
the same direction.
Swansea said another
neighborhood boy reported
the same thing happened
to him while he was wait
ing for the bus.
Swansea said sheriff’s
deputies agreed to have an
extra deputy patrolling the
area. Swansea said they
live right across from Lake
Juliette.
“I’m usually not a freaky
fuddy duddy,” said
Swansea. “But you never
know how’s coming into
our area off the interstate.”
Services Chief Ronald
Norris said, “It is a sad
event when a family’s
home catches fire, espe
cially during these holiday
seasons, but I am thankful
no one was injured.”
