area and they finally they
caught somebody.”
According to a DNR
report, on Nov. 30 at about
9:15 p.m., Monroe County
game warden Cpl. Tony
Wynne set up a nighttime
stakeout in Smarr after
receiving several com
plaints about night hunt
ing in the area. Wynne
said he heard what sound
ed like a small caliber gun
shot fairly close by and
went in search of the
source. Local residents
tried to direct him to the
area in which a vehicle had
gone, but the suspect had
too much of a head start. A
good vehicle description
was difficult due to heavy
fog. After a brief search
Wynne returned to his
position. That’s when local
residents heard shots near
another field on King
Road. Upon arrival there,
Wynne found that some
local residents, including
Commissioner Ham, had
stopped a suspicious vehi
cle in the area in which the
shot was fired. Inside the
vehicle were 18-year old
Matthew Lindsey, 19-year
old Stephen Cole Maddox
and a 16 year old juvenile,
whose name was not
released.
According to the report,
also found in the vehicle
were three rifles, two shot
guns, a spotlight, numer
ous expended shotgun
shells and rifle cartridges
in various calibers.
“They [DNR rangers]
interrogated the boys for a
while,” said Davis. “Then
one of the boy’s cell phones
rang. When the game war
den answered it, a male
voice said ‘so how many
deer did y’all kill?”’
According to the report,
the three were taken to the
Monroe County Justice
Center for interrogation by
Wynne and Ranger First
Class Keith Page. Ham
said he would be happy to
share the story, but wants
to wait until the case is
settled, just in case it goes
to court and he is called to
testify.
“I don’t want to say or do
anything that could mess
up the case,” said Ham.
Wynne also said he could
n’t comment on the
specifics of the case until it
is adjudicated. However,
following the investigation,
Wynne issued citations to
Lindsey and Maddox,
charging them with hunt
ing deer at night, hunting
from a vehicle and hunting
from a public road. The 16-
year old was released to
his parents.
“Poaching costs all of us
in a lot of ways. First of all
it’s very illegal. It’s very
unsafe,” said Davis.
“Poachers come in and just
take something that
landowners have been
growing for years.
Landowners cultivate the
deer population. They
plant food plots and let the
deer grow and do it the
right way and some poach
er just comes along a steals
from them in the middle of
the night. It’s just wrong.”
A court date has been set
for January. The two can
either pay the fines or
appear before the judge.
All three charges are mis
demeanors and carry a fine
of up to $1,000 and/or up
to 12 months in jail.

You ’ve been gone for 16 years,
