Cody Ham wins area wiring contest

Cody Ham, a junior at
Mary Persons High School,
recently participated in
the EMC/FFA Agricultural
Electrification Career
Development Event (CDE)
and placed first in the
Area III contest at Camp
John Hope in Fort Valley.
The Georgia FFA and
electric membership corpo
rations (EMCs) in Georgia,
including Southern Rivers
Energy (SRE), have offered
this educational initiative
for more than 40 years,
introducing agriculture
students to electrification
programs while teaching
safe, efficient use of elec
tricity Contest partici
pants complete a written
exam, a practical wiring
problem testing their
knowledge of the National
Electric Code, and an oral
presentation on steps to
complete a specific electri
cal task.
“The FFA wiring contest
is one of the most demand
ing yet rewarding competi
tions that FFA members
can participate in,” says
Erin Cook,
Communications Specialist
with Southern Rivers
Energy. “It teaches them
the practical skill of elec
trical wiring combined
with the life skills of prob
lem solving and public
speaking while promoting
self-confidence. Southern
Rivers Energy is proud to
sponsor such a well-round
ed educational event and
to contribute to the FFA
mission, which is to help
students develop their
potential for leadership
and career success through
agricultural education.”
Active FFA members
enrolled in a high school
agriculture education class
in SRE’s service area are
eligible to participate. The
top two individuals in each
area contest go on to com
pete for scholarship money
at the state meet. Cody
Ham and Josh Poole from
Bleckley County High
School will compete at the
state level at the FFA
Camp in Covington on
Saturday, Jan. 10.
College scholarships
earned in the wiring com
petitions can be used at
any college, university or
vocational school in
Georgia.
MP takes 2nd
The Mary Persons FFA
Junior and Senior Land
Judging Teams both
recently placed 2nd in
the State FFA Land
Judging Career
Development Event. The
event was held at C. M.
Stripling Irrigation
Research Center in
Camilla on Nov. 22.
Junior Team members
Kaylee Chitwood,
Brandon Lawson, Kell
Myrick, and Adair
Woodward became eligi
ble to compete at the
state event after winning
the Area (III) Land
Judging Career
Development Event.
Senior team members
Cory Adkins, Kyle
Herring, Heather
Johnson, and Derek
Watkins became eligible
to compete at the state
event after winning the
Area III event on (Oct. 18
at Fort Valley State
University in Fort Valley.
Individually, Brandon
Lawson placed 2nd,
Kaylee Chitwood placed
6th, and Adair Woodard
placed 7th out of 46 com
petitors in the Junior
level of competition. At
the Senior level, Heather
Johnson was the high
individual, and Kyle
Herring placed 6th and
Derek Watkins placed 9th
out of 47 Senior competi
tors.

tices for selected sites.
Phillips wins showmanship
at Peach County Cattle Show
