Happy birthday Jbsus
The McKinley family cel
ebrated the birth of Jesus
with a children’s party last
month. Jesus was the
guest of honor and there
were 12 children and
seven adults who partici
pated. The cost of admis
sion to the party was two
pieces of fruit, which were
turned into three fruit bas
kets for the neighborhood
shut-ins.
Everyone had fun mak
ing cookies that were a
flop. The children made a
manger with baby Jesus,
Mary and Joseph out of
cardboard, toothpicks, but-
terbeans and dried peas.
The younger children
made ornaments of shapes
and colors. The birthday
cake for Jesus was a spice
cake on gold paper, repre
senting the gold and
myrrh the wisemen
brought to Jesus. The cake
was topped with a red can
dle for understanding.
The tradition of having a
birthday party for Jesus
was started six years ago
for the McKinley grand
children so they could have
a special time to sing and
giggle and ask questions.
Children attending this
year were Tyler, Vickie and
Maggie Walker; Danielle
and Collin Hammock;
Jessica and Cody
Hammock; Ireland
Harbuck; Siera Mckinley;
Jennifer Irish; Liz
Thomson and Melodie
Erikson. The adults were
Chelle Walker, Ann
Mckinley, Elaine Daily, Jan
Irish, Tommy and Becky
McKinley.

Brown celebrates 90 years
SPECIAL TO THE
REPORTER
Sharon Church has been
the home church of Milton
Allison Brown’s family for
more than 150 years. On
Nov. 9, Sharon Primitive
Baptist Church at Strouds
was filled to the rafters
with family and friends
who were there to worship
the Lord and to celebrate
Allison’s 90th birthday.
Filling the church were
all 24 of Allison’s children,
grandchildren and great
grandchildren from his 48-
year marriage to the late
Rebecca Britt Brown; their
husbands and wives; plus
more than 100 additional
relatives from the Brown,
Pierson and Britt families.
Everyone sat on 100-year-
old pews that in 1926 had
been salvaged from an
older church, loaded onto a
wagon, and delivered to
this church building by an
8-year-old Allison Brown
and his father, the late
George Zachary Brown of
Culloden.
The singing was strong
and exuberant and includ
ed some of Allison’s
favorite hymns, including
“Sweet Hour of Prayer,”
which Allison explained
helped get him through
many dark times during
the Battle of the Bulge in
World War II. Dr.
Benjamin S. Brown of
Thomaston, Allison’s son,
gave a moving sermon;
Ricky Stewart of
Brunswick, Allison and
Rebecca’s great-great-
nephew-in-law, performed
an awe-inspiring version of
“How Great Thou Art”; and
Sharon’s Glory Singers
raised the rafters-more
than once!
After services, everyone
moved next door to the fel
lowship hall. Brown,
Pierson and Britt cousins
from far and wide remi
nisced about everything
from growing up in
Culloden to enjoying long
summer days at Cornus
Cove, Allison and Rebecca’s
cottage at Jackson Lake.
How many have been
pulled around that cove on
skis by Allison? Too many
to count!
As if all of this were not
enough, the celebration
was capped off with a deli
cious feast catered by Kym
ALLISON BROWN
and Ricky Stewart of
Brunswick; Kym is
Rebecca’s great-grandniece.
No one would leave hungry
on this day.
Allison had been asked
many times what he want
ed for his birthday. He told
everyone that he didn’t
want any presents, that he
just wanted to see their
face. On this day, at a
place called Sharon, where
was celebrated the long
and generous life of a per
son whom so many have
loved and looked up to for
so long, Allison Brown cer
tainly got his wish.

12 days of Christmas
T here are actual
ly 12 days of
Christmas. It is
called Christ-
mastide,
the season on the
Liturgical church
calendar, from
Christmas day to
Jan. 5. (Some tradi
tions give gifts each of the
twelve days during
Christmastide).
As a child we always
had Christmas stockings
hanging on the living
room mantel where the
Christmas tree was locat
ed. Every afternoon we
would go and check our
stockings to see if they
were empty. Much to our
delight there always
would be, what seemed to
us, an endless supply of
rolled caps for our cap
pistols.
That memory became a
tradition in our own fam
ily when our children
came along. We would
place gifts in their stock
ings each day of 12 days
of Christmas.
The last evening of
Christmastide Jan. 5 is
referred to as the twelfth
night. A time of celebra
tion anticipating the
coming of the three
Kings or Magi. Matthew
2:1-12.
Some cultures, espe
cially Hispanic or Latin
American, celebrate the
6th of January as Three
Kings Day or simply The
Day of the Kings. (Even
though Dec. 25 is cele
brated as Christmas day,
Jan. 6 is often the day for
giving gifts.)
Epiphany Day, Jan. 6 is
a feast day of the
Christian Church com
memorating the reveal
ing of Jesus as the Christ
to the gentiles. That is
our Hope of Christmas.
May God bless you in
this new year with a
renewed hope.

Medications for Bell’s Palsy Symptoms
Bell’s palsy is a condition that may result when the nerve
that is responsible for controlling the facial muscles is swollen
or compressed in some manner. The condition may occur as a
result of a viral infection, which may be due to several virus
es including herpes simplex virus, herpes zoster, Epstein-Barr
virus, or cytomegalovirus. Pregnant women, persons infected
with a respiratory infection, and persons with diabetes are an
increased risk. Sudden paralysis on one side of the face, pain
near the ear on the affected side of the face, and headaches
are symptoms of Bell’s palsy. Other symptoms include difficul
ty with facial expressions, loss of taste, and change in tear
and saliva production. Symptoms typically begin to improve
within a few weeks, and complete recovery is likey to occur
with 3 to 6 months, however some persons may not experience
a full recovery.
Although many persons may recover fully without treat
ment, medications are available for associated signs and
symptoms. Coricosteroids, such as prednisone, work to reduce
inflammation and swelling of the facial nerve. Antivirals,
such as acyclovir and valacyclovir, may be useful when the
condition is caused by a virus. The medications may be used
either alone or in combination.
