Dog
BY LAURA
THACKSTON
A Monroe County man
is happy to have his dog
“Sosha” safely back home
after it went missing and
ended up in Ft. Payne,
Ala.
Walter Rainey reported
his dog missing on
Monday, Dec. 29. Rainey
said he was inside paying
for gas at Kelly’s Bait
and Tackle in High Falls
on Christmas Eve when
someone took his
Pomeranian dog from his
truck. Rainey said his
grandson, Edward Jones,
n,
later got a call from a
woman who had taken
the dog. The woman
wanted Rainey to know
that the dog was safe and
she had it with her in Ft.
Payne, Ala. She had got
ten Jones’ number off the
dog’s collar. Freeman
tried calling the woman,
but no one answered.
At 4:40 p.m., she called
Lt. Brad Freeman of the
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Office but told him she
didn’t know anything
about the missing dog.
When asked how Rainey’s
grandson was able to get
her number, she told
Freeman an elaborate
story about how she and
her boyfriend had been
approached at a gas sta
tion by a teenage girl
with a small dog. The
woman said the teenage
girl called the owners
using her phone before
she left the gas station.
She later called Freeman
and told him she had fab
ricated the story. The
subject said she had the
dog but denied stealing
it. She said she and her
boyfriend had been trav
elling on 1-75 and stopped
in High Falls for gas.
They found the dog wan
dering around the park
ing lot and took it inside
Kelly’s Bait and Tackle.
When she asked a clerk if
the dog belonged to any
one, the clerk said it had
probably been dumped.
The phone number listed
on the collar was not
local and so she kept the
dog. But when she
returned to Alabama and
called the listed number
she realized it had not
been abandoned. She
then called the clerk at
Kelly’s Bait and Tackle
High
and was told a mistake
had been made. She said
she was afraid the dog
owner would harm her
and therefore had lied
about the situation when
Freeman called.
The woman contacted
Sgt. Haskins later on
Dec. 29 and the dog was
reunited with Rainey. The
clerk at Kelly’s Bait and
Tackle was contacted and
her story was confirmed.
When Freeman called
Rainey the next day, he
said his dog had been
returned by deputies and

was in good shape. No
charges were filed.
Incidents
The Monroe County
Sheriff’s office reported the
following incidents Dec.27-
30:
Animals attacked
and killed at
Twin Oaks
At 11:01 a.m. on Dec. 27
Cpl. T. White was dis
patched to Johnstonville
Road after a complainant
said he had shot two dogs
earlier that morning that
were running in the fields.
Then, at 11 a.m., Deputy
Morgan got a call about a
llama walking near the
interstate that belonged to
Twin Oaks Fun Farm.
When one of the owners of
Twin Oaks arrived at the
farm he noticed that two of
his goats and two of his
sheep were dead, while two
other sheep were severely
injured. The first com
plainant said his miniature
horse was injured so badly
that he had to put it down.
The owner of the farm said
dogs had attacked three
weeks ago and he had
talked to the owner of the
stray dogs. The com
plainants gave White the
subject’s address. White
found two dogs covered in
blood at the subject’s
house. The man would not
go outside. The com
plainant spoke to the man
later and the dogs were
put down. None of the com
plainants wanted to press
charges, but they did want
compensation for the dead
animals.
Man nearly run
over by neighbor
At 5:21 p.m. on Dec. 28 a
man said he was walking
down a private driveway
he and a woman share
when the woman tried to
run over him with her car.
The victim said he has had
several other incidents
with her because of a pend
ing lawsuit. The victim
wanted a police report for
documentation purposes.
The suspect denied trying
to run over the victim. She
also said the victim has
been harassing her, drink
ing alcohol while underage
and dumping trash on her
property.
Drugs found in
traffic stop
At 5:07 p.m. on Dec. 29
Sgt. Haskins stopped a
black Acura for going 85
mph on 1-75. There was an
odor of marijuana coming
from the car and it
appeared the driver had
tried to cover it up by
spraying cologne and air
freshener. When Haskins
went to the passenger side
of the car, the smell
became stronger. The driv
er said it had been awhile
since anyone had used
marijuana in the car. When
Haskins searched the car,
he found a brown paper
bag with a glass smoking
device and a smaller bag of
marijuana. The driver said
it was his and not the pas
senger’s. He was arrested
for possession of marijuana
and speeding.
Guns, jewelry
stolen from
house
At 11:29 p.m. on Dec. 30
Deputy T. Daniels was dis
patched to Old Cork Road
in reference to a burglary.
A complainant said some
one entered her house and
stole two guns and a large
amount of jewelry. She said
she had gone out of town
on Dec. 20 and when she
returned she noticed the
items missing. There was
no sign of forced entry and
the owners of the house
were unable to provide
serial numbers for the
handguns. They were told
to contact the sheriff’s
office if they had any other
information.
No good deed
goes unpunished
At 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 30 a
complainant said his son
had been moving items
from a house next door
when his son got angry
and hit him in the chest.
The complainant said his
son had been evicted and
he was offering to help him
move when the suspect
cussed at him. At that
point the complainant left
and went back to his
house, but his son showed
up later and hit him in the
chest with a board, causing
a bruise. The complainant
said his son also busted
out the window on his door
before leaving. The victim
said the suspect was on
drugs and that was why he
was acting like that.
