Here are the top MCR
vents from this week, as
ranked by our readers.

Not only should the county
use the old jail site for a new
commission (and related serv
ices) building but at the same
time there'd be an opportunity
to re-vitalize a neighborhood
and do away with the inacces
sible off ice behind the old jail,

After almost 20 years in
Monroe County there are no
signs of new businesses and
no jobs here. What is the prob
lem? My children have to
move off unless they are a
member of an old family in
order to work. I like small
towns but this is ridiculous,

Happy New Year Monroe
County; let's pray for a fresh
new administration and a posi
tive approach to county busi
ness! rank: 6
Good thing Tech is getting a
ring for beating UGA; cause
LSU killed them in the Chick-fil-
a Bowl, rank: 4
American people have done
what was desired - we are
driving less and buying less
gas - so we get rewarded with
a new gas tax? How typical,

About the story “Officer
protests loss of insurance,” that
should send a message to all
officers on the beat..if it looks
like you may get injured..you
may not want to stop the vil
lain..the joker wins again.
Thanks for showing the officers
how much you care for them in
their time of need, rank: 3
The only "crazy" one is the
commissioner who made the
insulting comment about the
tax paying residents of the
High Falls community, rank: 1
Why after almost 10 years of
paying a monthly fee for south
Monroe County water services,
which actually consists of a
empty box in our front yard, do
I still get a monthly bill. I am
and have never been connect
ed to the water system. I was
told that I had to pay a $500
fee to have access with the
box in the yard. So I have paid
$500. plus $12 a month since.
This is ridiculous and I plan to
attend the next county comm,
meeting and ask that question.
I can see if I use the water but
I don't, rank: 1
Legacy sheriffs take oaths
Sheriff John Cary Bittick, middle, was joined by neighboring
sheriffs Gene Pope of Butts County, left, and Joe Buice of Lamar
County in taking their oaths of office for their new terms last
Wednesday in the Monroe County courthouse. All three were re
elected in 2008. They have something else in common. All
three are legacy sheriffs, meaning they are the sons of sheriffs.
Further, Bittick and Pope are the grandsons of sheriffs. Superior
Court Judge Tommy Wilson, right, of the Towaliga Judicial Cir
cuit, which includes Monroe, Lamar and Butts counties, admin
istered the oath. Probate
Judge Karen Pitman also
swore in other top county offi
cials last week, including
new commission chairman
James Vaughn and new tax
commissioner Lori Andrews.

MY BUSINESS
MY CHAMBER
'Any business should take advantage
of what the chamber offers...'
- Wanda Fountain
Through my business associations I am happy to have been a member of the Forsyth-
Monroe County Chamber of Commerce since 1979. In June 2007,1 was able to start my
own publication, Columns Magazine for Middle Georgians, and I did not give a second
thought about joining our chamber. With the shape the economy is in I needed an advo
cate for my new business. The Forsyth-Monroe County Chamber of Commerce is a voice
for small businesses like mine. They host various educational seminars throughout the
year on business oriented topics that are helpful. As a chamber member I was able to
develop a network of business contacts and potential customers through the Business
After Hours held monthly at different businesses. I also attended Leadership Monroe
which gave me the opportunity to learn more about my community and its leaders. I
would recommend any business - small or large - to take advantage of what the
Forsyth-Monroe County Chamber of Commerce can offer them.
