also receive Title I distinction again
In addition to being recognized as a
Title I Distinguished School for the
third year in a row, Banks Stephens
Middle School was also named one of
only two National Title I
Distinguished Schools for the state of
Georgia. Banks Stephens exceeded
the benchmarks required to make
AYP. The CRCT results in reading,
English language arts and mathe
matics are used to determine the
winning schools. The school will
receive $15,000 in federal funds and
be honored on Jan. 23 at the Georgia
Department of Education - Georgia
Schools of Excellence banquet and
the National Title I Conference in
San Antonio, Texas in February.
All four Title I schools in the
Monroe County School system were
among the 777 Georgia 2008-09 Title
I Distinguished Schools. Recognition
is based on the number of consecu
tive years a school makes adequate
yearly progress (AYP). Samuel
Hubbard Elementary School and
T.G. Scott Elementary School made
AYP for eight consecutive years.
Each school will receive a certificate
and a monetary award from federal
funds. Banks Stephens Middle
School and William M. Hubbard
Middle School made AYP for three
consecutive years. Each school will
receive a certificate.

MP prepares for
new class schedule
Mary Persons High
School will introduce a
new hybrid
schedule for
the 2009-10
school year.
Students will
have the oppor
tunity to earn
seven credits
per school year
instead of the
current six.
This was sparked by the
Georgia Dept, of
Education’s new guidelines
requiring high school stu
dents entering the ninth
grade next year to earn 23
credits for graduation.
Under the current sched
ule, MP students can earn
as many as 24 credits, but
administrators said there
needs to be more of a
buffer than just one credit.
The school board is also
expected to approve a pro
posal requiring MP stu
dents to earn 25 credits in
order to graduate MP,
effective with the incoming
freshmen in
2009-10.
To help pre
pare parents
and students on
what to expect
with registra
tion, the new
schedules and
requirements,
Hubbard Middle
is hosting a discussion
meeting at 6 p.m. on
Monday, Feb. 2 in the
William Hubbard Middle
School cafeteria.
Sandy Colwell, assistant
principal at Mary Persons
High School Freshman
Campus, will be at HMS to
discuss upcoming MPHS
registration dates, the reg
istration process, transi
tioning to Freshman
Campus, new graduation
rules and requirements,
along with a question and
