Touchdown Club banquet
honors MP football players
T he Mary Persons Touchdown
Club hosted its annual foot
ball awards banquet Jan. 26 as
MP players and coaches were
recognized for their accom
plishments during the 2008 season.
Awards were given to the top athletes and
scholars.
New this year, the touchdown club
established the Marion O’Neal -
Archie Tingle Football Scholarship for
a deserving senior football player. The
scholarship honors two former MP
players, Marion “Possum” O’Neal and
Mr. Archie Tingle. Both Mr. O’Neal
and Mr. Tingle were graduates of
Mary Persons High School in the
early 1940s. Both were outstanding
football players for the Bulldogs. This
scholarship was named after these
gentlemen because they have upheld
the Mary Persons football tradition
by serving our country in such an
extreme manner as a Prisoner of War.
Jeffry Powers was awarded the
$1,000 scholarship for excelling in the
classroom, on the football field, and in
the community.
In addition to the awards, each sen
ior player was presented with his
senior jersey and a framed jersey,
compliments of the Touchdown Club.
Jeffry Powers received a $1,000 scholarship in honor of Marion O’Neal and Archie Tin
gle. On hand to present the check were representatives from the families, the widow of
Archie Tingle and Minton O’Neal.
The Touchdown Club presents former MP player Zapareo Glover with a
check for $4,335, proceeds from various fundraisers throughout the sea
son. Also pictured left: Steve Coleman the recipient of the Marion Dorner
12th Man Award for his contributions to MP football.
Academic Awards were given the player with highest
grade point average in each class. Freshman: Jordan
Whitehead (not pictured); sophomore: John Venners

Rec basketball begins
The 2009 season of Monroe County
Recreation Department basketball
begins this Saturday. All regular
season games and play-offs will be
played a the Youth Center. The
Championships games, set for March
28, will be played at the James R
Evans Jr. Gymnasium at Mary
Persons.

Mustangs split
region games
The Monroe Academy
Mustangs travelled to
Carrollton to take on the
first place Oak Mountain
Academy Warriors last
week trying to avenge an
earlier loss. Tied 7-7 after
the first quarter, the
Mustangs went in at half
down two 18-16. The third
quarter saw the Warriors
point guard get hot and hit
four straight threes to
open the contest up. The
Mustangs battled but
dropped the contest 57-44.
On Senior Night Friday
the boys hosted the Praise
Academy lions from
Powder Springs. The
Mustangs won the previ
ous contest 37-32. Both
teams deadlocked after the
first 8-8. Aaron Pulser lead
the way with seven of the
Mustangs' eight points.
The second quarter was
also very even with the
Mustangs taking a one
point lead into the half 18-
17. Purser and Keaton
Williams lead the way in
the second with four points
a piece. Purser, who played
his best game of the year,
again paced the Stangs
with seven. The Mustangs
took a 31-27 lead into the
final period. In the fourth
the Mustangs played a
very good quarter and
went on to win the game
50-39 as they netted 19
points in the fourth.
Purser had a career high
26 points including seven
for ten from the line.
Williams scored 13 fol
lowed by Speir with four,
Harrelson with two, White
with two, Adam Laney
with two and Bell with
one. "Big win for us
tonight. We are now 4-5 in
the region and are playing
to see how high of a seed
we can get for next week's
region tournament," Coach
Aaron Kanner said.
Monroe ladies suffer
first region loss
The Lady Mustangs lost
their first region game last
Tuesday to the Oak
Mountain Academy Lady
Warriors, 52-21. The Lady
Warriors came out hot and
jumped to an early lead,
17-4 and were ahead 34-8
at the half. The Lady
Mustangs scored 17 points
in the second half, but the
Warriors answered with 18
points and kept the lead
until the end.
"We struggled tonight,
but I am still very proud of
my girls for not quitting
and continuing to play
hard. We still have a
chance to win the region or
at least be co-champions,"
Coach Kanner said.
On Friday the Lady
Mustangs hosted Praise
Academy Lady Lions and
were looking to bounce
back. The girls came out
pressing and played great
defense to take a 7-0 lead.
Kimberly Vinson led the
way with four points. In
the second quarter
Caroline Smith had two
big three-pointers. The
Lady Mustangs went on to
a 38-12 victory that ran
their record to 10-9 (6-1)
R4A.
The Lady Mustangs trav
eled to Covenant Academy
Tuesday and came home
with another win. At worst
MA will be co-regular sea
son region champions.
"This was a big win
tonight. We now must
focus on Tuesday and go
down to Macon and take
care of business. No matter
what happens I am very
proud of the girls, we have
had a great year and we
look forward to having a
great last few weeks of the
season," said Kanner.
On Friday Vinson paced
the Lady Mustangs with
14 points, Smith with
seven, Sarah Hoppell with
seven, Leanne Maxwell
with four, Callie
McMichael with two,
Autumn Duckworth with
two and Jamie Tidwell
with two.
C-team Dogs head to playoffs
The Monroe County boy’s basketball C-team is headed to the play
offs after defeating defending East league champions Lamar Coun
ty Middle School in a backyard battle. The team will travel to
Greenville to play Greenville Middle School as the third seed.
Game time is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3. The C team finished the reg
ular season with an impressive 10-4 overall record.
