Thiamine and Kidney Disease
Thiamine is a B-complex vitamin, also known as Vitamin
B-l. This vitamin plays an important role in nerve and mus
cle function, the processing carbohydrates for energy, regu
lating the flow of electrolyzes into and out of body cells, and
producing acid in the stomach. Thiamine levels are main
tained through our daily dietary consumption. Thiamine
deficiency can occur in as little as 14 days.
One recent study evaluated the effect of high-dose thi
amine supplementation on kidney function in people with
Type-2 diabetes and microalbuminuria (a condition that
occurs when the kidneys lose their ability to filter properly,
allowing small amounts of protein to leak into urine). Forty
people relieve either placebo (dummy medicine) tablets or
thiamine 300mg daily for three months. At the conclusion of
the study, those that received high-dose thiamine had sig
nificantly less protein present in the urine compared with
those that took the placebo. There were no side effects from
thiamine reported during the study. Thiamine is usually
well tolerated; however, large doses may cause drowsiness
and relaxed muscles.
Six local authors shared
their creative talents at
the Taylor House on Jan.
23. Karen Cromer began
the evening with a reading
of her book, Nana’s Fairies.
Following a soup supper,
the writers discussed their
individual writing tech
niques, inspirational ideas,
publishing hints, etc.
Some read excerpts from
their works. Besides
Karen Cromer, other
authors present were Kelli
Bowden, Anne Jones, Misti
Lott, Niki Collins-Queen
and Buzz Tanner.
The Taylor House plans
on future authors’ nights
showing not only other
Monroe County writers but
also those from the Central
Ga. Area. If interested in
participating as an author
or attendee, please contact

Writers Speak: A spoken word
performance at the Rose
BY PATSY
VEDDER CLARK
The Rose Theater stage
was set a little differently
on Friday night, Jan. 9.
The ambience changed to a
coffee house where writers
share their work. The the
ater was filled with an
audience ready for a liter
ary adventure, and they
were definitely not disap
pointed. The Generations
Writers, a writers group
based at Generations
Gallery in the Village of
Indian Springs, were there
to share their stories. The
belief that each of us has a
story to tell brought them
together about a year ago.
Some are poets, some are
inspirational writers, some
are novelists, and all are
storytellers. It was an
interesting mix of very tal
ented, creative writers.
The audience listened and
laughed as Sandra Cropsey
read about Momma, Ivylee,
and Precious from Who’s
There, her story of a dys
functional family. Interest
in history was piqued by
Estelle Ford Williamson’s
readings from her histori
cal novel, Abbeville
Farewell and her yet to be
published novel, Rising
Fawn. Local poets Pat
Bauer Freeman, Michelle
Avery and Sharon Bailey
intrigued the audience
with the depth of their
thoughts expressed poeti
cally. Anne Jones read
from her serial killer novel,
Black Water Rising leaving
everyone with a chill.
Josephine Bush and Josie
Bailey each shared inspira
tional wisdom. The two
attorneys, Roger Fenton
and Rita Lewis, held our
interest as they shared
tales from their experi
ences. Kathy Myers had us
chuckling with her stories
of Otis. Geleta Fenton’s
excerpts from her chil
dren’s book, Joel’s
Adventures at Sea has us
wondering what will hap
pen next as Joel was swept
overboard. Niki Queen’s
encounter with a moose
was unnerving and excit
ing and the excerpt from
Earth, The Forgotten
Temple was thought pro
voking. Theresa Edwards
delighted the audience as
she read an excerpt from
her children’s book, Merlin
and the Snow Princess.
Marian Shearer’s excerpts
from Childhood Memories
helped us to see life from a
child’s point of view, and
Walnut Grove helps us
remember to care for the
environment. Tammy
Yarborough read her chil
dren’s book, What Happens
When Someone Dies, which
is insightful and helpful for
dealing with the passing of
a relative or friend and
was illustrated by Sheila
Looman. Patricia Lewis, a
very talented young gui
tarist entertained before
the performance and dur
ing the intermission. It
was a joyful literary event.
Generations Gallery at
the Village of Indian
Springs hosts the
Generations Writers every
Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00.
Everyone is invited to join
the group and share your
story. For more informa
tion, contact Patsy Clark at
clarkpvclark@aol.com or

Monroe Cares, a newly
organized committee,
which is seeking to collect
food donations throughout
the year benefited from the
performance.
