Locust Grove man gets 2nd DUI
BY LAURA
THACKSTON
A Locust Grove man was
arrested Jan. 24 accused of
DUI, wrecking his car and
passing out behind the
wheel on Rumble Road.
According to a sheriffs
report, deputy Hawkins
was dispatched to a car
accident at 1:09 a.m. on
Rumble Road. When he
arrived, a Chevrolet truck
was parked in the middle
of the road and had exten
sive damage to the front.
The damage had apparent
ly occurred when the driv
er ran off the road and hit
a culvert. The driver,
Thomas Harold Morgan,
was sitting in the driver's
seat asleep. Hawkins tried
to wake Morgan by knock
ing on the window, but was
unable to do so. Hawkins
then opened the truck door
and could smell a strong
odor of alcohol coming from
the driver and car.
According to the report, he
had to vigorously shake
Morgan to wake him up.
Morgan had a hard time
keeping his balance as he
exited the car and told
Hawkins he had parked in
the road so he could rest.
When Hawkins told
Morgan he had been in an
accident, Morgan said he
hadn't. Morgan denied
drinking but agreed to
take sobriety tests.
According to the report,
Morgan tested positive for
alcohol consumption and
became very irate when
Hawkins was giving him
sobriety tests. Morgan
repeatedly told Hawkins
that the tests were
designed to make him fail.
When Hawkins asked a
second time if he had been
drinking, Morgan said he'd
had a couple of beers. He
was arrested for DUI and
agreed to give a breath test
once he was at the jail.
When Hawkins grabbed
Morgan by the arm to take
him to his patrol car,
Morgan snatched away and
asked where they were
going. Hawkins told him he
was under arrest and he
was taking him to his
patrol car. According to the
report, Hawkins then told
Morgan to sit down in the
car but Morgan refused
and continued to snatch
away. Hawkins forced
Morgan against his car in
an effort to get control of
him and told him to sit
down. Morgan became
more irate but finally
obeyed Hawkins' orders
and got into the car. At the
jail, Hawkins tried to give
Morgan a breathalyzer test
but he cussed at Hawkins
and the test was terminat
ed.
Morgan was charged with
DUI (second offense), fail
ure to maintain lane and
driving with a suspended
license (third offense).
Morgan also had a warrant
for his arrest in Butts
County.
