Four Dogs sign letters of intent
S urrounded by family, friends,
coaches and teammates, four
Mary Persons Bulldog football
players signed National letters of in
tent on National Signing Day, Feb. 4.
All four players will receive a full scholarship.
“I am very excited for these young men,”
said Coach Rodney Walker. “They have
worked hard and it is paying off. A lot of
time and effort has gone into this. Now
it’s all on their shoulders. Now they have
to grow up and be men.”
Jaderius Hamlin racked up some pretty
impressive numbers as a Bulldog and will
play at Middle Tennessee State next fall.
Hamlin says he is not sure what he will
major in yet, but says his education is the
most important thing.
“Of course I would love to play in the
NFL one day,” said Hamlin. “But right
now I will just concentrate on college.”
Hamlin says he picked Middle Tennessee
after a visit to the campus inspired him.
Hamlin is the son of Cheryl Davis and the
nephew of Elnora Lyons.
Defensive lineman Devarick Jones
signed with the Tuskegee Tigers. He
plans to major in agriculture. He is the
son of Beverly and Leonard Jones.
Chris Bowden signed with Wingate
College. He said he picked the school
because of its good academic reputation
and is thinking about majoring in busi
ness. He is the son of Lisa Bowden.
Offensive lineman Devin Chambliss will
be going to Georgia Military College in
Milledgeville to work on his grades. He
says he hopes to continue to play college
football. Chambliss is the son of Fred and
Debbie Chambliss.

Baseball clinic Sat.
The Monroe County Recreation Department will host a
baseball clinic Saturday, Feb. 14 from 9 - 11 a.m. behind
the old MP gym in front of the stadium. The clinic will
be led by MP baseball coach Jonathan Gastley and will
include tips on hitting, fielding, baserunning and pitch
ing.. The clinic is free. For more info call the Rec Dept,

Softball clinic Feb. 21
The Monroe County Softball Committee will hold a soft-
ball clinic on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon for
ages 7-10 and from 1 - 3 p.m. for ages 11-14.
The softball draft will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28.
Times will be set after the clinic.

MP boys finally win region game
The Mary Persons
Bulldogs won their
first region game of
the season Friday
night against
Woodward Academ,
47-33. The win
improved MP’s record
to 5-15 and 1-11 in
region play, but the
Bulldogs are still in
last place in 4AAA.
The much-needed
win came after four
losses in a row.
Leading in scoring
for the Dogs were
Chris Bowden, with
15 points and
Roctavious Zellner,
who had 12 points.
Also scoring were
Johnny Lackey,
Barrett Harris and
Meshari Walton, with
5 points apiece. Tevin
Davis scored 4 points
and Garret Walker
scored 1 point.
The Bulldogs lost to
rival Jackson last
Roctavious Zellner (22) scored 12 points in the
win over Woodward Academy.
Tuesday, 39-34.
On Sturday, the

The region tournament
begins next week.
Lady Mustangs grab no. 2 spot
The Lady Mustangs finished the
2008-09 regular season 10-11 and 6-
2 in region play. This was a big turn
around from last year's 1-22 season.
The Lady Mustangs will be in the
state playoffs for the first time in
many years as the second seed.
The Lady Mustangs dropped a
tough game last Tuesday at
Covenant Academy 49-26 after
being down 33-9 at half. In the
third the Mustangs played better
and outscored Covenant 10-4. The
fourth quarter saw the Lady
Mustangs net seven points to
Covenant’s 12.
The Lady Mustangs were led by
Caroline Smith, who scored 14
points including three pointers, and
3-4 from the foul line. Jamie Adams
scored 2 points, Kimberly Vinson
and Sarah Hoppell each cored 3
points. Holly Ham and Callie
McMichael scored 2 apiece.
THE MONROE boys finished
fifth in the region after losing one
at the buzzer Saturday.
The Mustangs dropped a tough
game 51-50 against Solid Rock
Academy. The Mustangs were led in
the first by Keaton Williams, who
scored four. The Mustangs came
alive in the second, scoring 16 paced
by Drew Speir with seven points.
MA went into the half down 26-23.
In the third both teams went back
and forth with the Lions taking a
two point lead 39-37 in the fourth.
In the fourth quarter the Mustangs
finally took the lead. With the
Mustangs up by two with 10 sec
onds left the Lions grabbed a
missed foul shot, raced down the
court and threw up a three pointer
that went off the backboard and in
to give the Lions a 51-50 victory at
the buzzer.
The Mustangs finished 4-8 in
region and will be the number five
seed.
The Mustangs travel to Carrollton
to take on Solid Rock Academy on
Tuesday at 5:30. The winner
advances to State playoffs and the
losers are finished for the season.
The Lady Mustangs will play
Thursday at 4 p.m. against
Covenant Academy in the region
semifinals.
