Rack tours
Ft Beiming
On Jan. 14, Monroe County school superintendent
Anthony Pack, traveled to Fort Benning in Columbus, to
participate in Bosslift. The Employer Support of The
Guard and Reserve (ESGR) hosted a group of over 40
employers from all over the state of Georgia. The pri
mary objective of this trip was for employers to become
more familiar with the activation of the 48th Infantry
Battalion, based out of Forsyth.
The day started with the group from Central Georgia
leaving the National Guard Armory located in Forsyth at
6:30 a.m. and traveling to Robins Air Force Base where
they were flown on a C23 to Fort Benning. While at Fort
Benning the group was welcomed by Chief of Staff Col.
Durr, listened to a presentation by Commanding General
MG Barbero, was briefed on the Employer Support of
Guard and Reserve Mission, and was briefed on the
48th Brigade Mission by Col. Botters and Col. Durham.
The group heard from Lt. Col. J. Specht regarding the
Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment
Rights Act Briefing.
Employers of the guard and reserves were given a
demonstration of the various types of simulators military
personnel use for training. The group was given the
opportunity to enter Bradley Tank Simulators and expe
rience shooting the weapons. The staff at Fort Benning
further briefed the group on simulations software.
Finally, a full demonstration of a military equipment
from various types of military rifles to tanks was
observed at Red Cloud Range. After the demonstration,
the group was allowed to enter the practice field to par
ticipate in a Hands on Training Exercise (HOTEX). See
attached photo.
Pack took the opportunity to shoot an M107 .50 Caliber
Long Range Sniper Rifle (LRSR) and signed the
"Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve".
Pack said he learned a great deal about how our mili
tary are trained as well as what they go through to be
ready to defend our nation and her causes.
“The weapons our guys use are unreal in their capabili
ties. I guess the most important aspect of the day for me
was knowing are soldiers are volunteers. Their efforts on
all of our (civilians) behalf provides us with the many
comforts and freedoms that we sometimes take for grant
ed. As a public educator, I know that our education sys
tem is the foundation of our democratic society but our
military allows us to maintain who we are and what we
stand for in America. I hope we never fail to remember
all those who have given so freely for our freedoms."

MP students job
shadow for a day
The 2009 Groundhog Job Shadow Day at Mary
Persons High School was held on Monday, Feb. 2.
Over 150 business students in grades 9-12 partici
pated in this opportunity. What’s job “shadowing?”
Just as the legendary groundhog spots its own shad
ow, so too did employers across the state. Except
this time, the “shadow” was the students.
Job shadowing lets students discover up-close the
world of work. Many students took tours of work
places in Monroe County and saw different kinds of
careers in action. Students were required to ask
questions to the employee so they would know exact
ly what it’s like on the job. More importantly, they
became familiar with the kind of education and skills
needed to be successful on the job. After the shadow
ing experience, students shared what they had
learned in the classroom. MP thanked the businesses
which participated in this learning experience and to
all the schools in the Monroe County School System
and The Monroe County Hospital for allowing stu
dents to job shadow.
Tamarkis Taylor, a senior at MP, shadowed Mrs. Charity
Brown at Hubbard Elementary School.
