Rev. Chris Mullis presents Habitat building co-chair Julius Stroud with a gift that made it possible for
Habitat to complete its latest house. Looking on is Mt. Zion mission chair and Habitat volunteer David
Woodberry, along with co-chair Glover Stuart and Habitat volunteer Royce Morgan.
Mt Zion UMC: A church
with an eye for service
A trip down
Hwy. 41 to
the communi
ty of Smarr
will bring you
to a church that would fit
well in a Rockwell painting.
Mt. Zion United Methodist
is a white frame church
which sits quietly among
some oaks. The quiet setting
belies the energy that is gen
erated within the walls of
this church. If you chose to
attend a service you will find
a warm welcome and a
group of people who are en
thusiastic about fife and the
energy generated within
leaves the walls of the
church and seeks to help oth
ers. The help by this ener
gized congregation begins lo
cally and extends as far as
Kenya and Guatemala.
On any given day of a
Habitat build you will find
one or more individuals
from Mt. Zion very much
involved in sharing their
talents to make decent
housing available for those
in need. Last April Mt.
Zion had 27 people partici
pate in building Habitat’s
last house that was dedi
cated in June. A number
of people from Mt. Zion
have offered critical skills
at critical times on its cur
rent build. Rusty Vullo
and David Woodberry were
present to help install the
roofing to be sure the
house was” dried in” and
the interior protected from
rain. Besides giving time
and talent the church has
made two significant gifts
to Habitat. These gifts
helped to insure that the
current house is finished.
Mt. Zion’s mission efforts
are not limited to Habitat
builds. In fact it is just the
beginning. The Monroe
County Care Cottage has
been the recipient of funds
to help victims of crime.
The church also collected
stuffed toys for the Care
Cottage. These toys are
important to young chil
dren who may be displaced
because of family problems
When the Mother’s Day
tornado struck Bibb
County Mt. Zion sprang
into action. Six members
showed up to help the Red
Cross unload supplies.
Two more gave a day to
help the Red Cross serve
meals while others provid
ed ice to families who
needed to keep food cool in
their refrigerators until
power could be restored.
Additionally funds were
provided to church families
who suffered losses during
the tornado. Wash cloths
and towels were given to
the Red Cross to be used
by people temporarily dis
place by the tornado.
Pastor Chris Mullis and
other members have volun
teered time at the Circle of
Care as another means of
helping. On any given
work day a member of Mt.
Zion can be found sorting

clothes or helping to hang
and straighten clothes in a
given area.
People in the community
have been given funds to
provide medical assistance
that would otherwise not
have been provided. Many
in the community have
been provided with meals
during trying time.
One of the churches more
unique programs is the
“nosey neighbor commit
tee”. According to mission
chair David Woodberry this
group has a vital role to
play in the church’s out
reach. According to
Woodberry, “What we have
learned is that so many
times individuals who real
ly need help may be hesi
tant or unwilling to ask for
help. The role of the nosey
neighbor network is to
make the missions commit
tee aware of those needs so
those individual also can
be helped. This network is
active both within the
church and in the larger

Mt. Zion has been one of
the top fund raisers in
Relay for Life for a number
of years. If one visited the
Relay “campsite” you
would find warmth, fun
and plenty of good food.
Red Ezelle who has been
one of the church leaders
in its Relay for Life efforts
has also been very active
in Habitat. He along with
other church members has
been responsible for help
ing Habitat purchase heat
ing and air systems for the
last five houses at a very
modest cost. He along
with others has then
installed the systems in
each of the five houses.
Why does Mt Zion do so
much in the community?
According to Ezelle, “I
think we do these things
because God expects us to
do them and because we
can. There are rewards
here in the smiles and
tears of those we help but
we also know that there
are rewards to come later.
I guess in a nutshell we do
because we do it.”
The list of the involve
ment of this church is
exhausting. According to
Pastor Chris Mullis there
is no let up in the church’s
efforts. “Our mission com
mittee plans to build and
raffle two play houses.
These funds will be used in
other mission projects. We
also hope to help with a
Habitat build in the fall.
Our desire to do for our
community is a part of who
we are.” Mullis added, “I
think an essential summa
ry of why we do what we
do is that God loves us, so
we can’t help but love oth
ers the way He loves us.”
Prime Home
re-financed our home
Interest rates are falling, and Ronnie Kinnas at Prime Home Mortgage in
Forsyth helped us lock in a much lower rate recently. We bought our
home in 2007, but interest rates have already fallen enough to make a
refinance worthwhile. Prime Home helped us save hundreds of dollars
of month on our house payment.

The power of love

the hospital bed,

suddenly and

She had

herself
healthy;
so had
her family. Yet, hearts
seem to have a will of their
own, and hers had failed
without clear warning.
Standing next to the
bed, holding his mother’s
hand, stood her son, tear
ful yet silent. Clearly, he
wanted to speak, but
words were difficult. He
loved his mother; he had
often enjoyed short visits,
spoken with her regularly
by phone, celebrated her
special days with caring
gifts. She knew he loved
her, and he knew she
loved him.
And as she slipped off to
her next life, if one lis
tened closely, his whispers
could be heard: “Mother, I
love you. Hear me if you
can. I love you. Forgive me

The most longed-

are too seldom
spoken. The most

too seldom heard.
When spoken they
are more than

They are
gifts of
the soul.
They are the simple words
upon which our religion is
based and families and
friendships are built. But,
alas, they are often felt
and too seldom spoken.
There is a mighty
motive for Valentine’s Day,
for it gives a reminder, a
spurring, to speak those
dear and mighty words.
Even for the shy, a bought
card and a signed corner
speak for us. A box of
chocolates act for us. The

Let it be the song we
sing. Let it be the joy we

And let it be while there
