Ivey Builders wins Golden Nail
Bobby Ivey of Ivey Builders is presented with a Golden Nail Award
by Ansley Hunt at the Forsyth-Monroe County Chamber of Com
merce’s annual awards banquet Jan. 22 for its new office on John-
stonville Road. Ivey Builders has served Monroe County since 1985
with remodeling and custom, single-family homes. Last January,
Ivey made a new home for his business at 4169 Johnstonville
Road. The chamber thanked Bobby and Stephanie Ivey for their
many years of expertise and dedication to the building industry in
Monroe County.
Wal-Mart eyes an
autumn opening
It appears Wal-Mart will be opening its Supercenter in
Forsyth by Thanksgiving.
That's the word from city and county officials working
with Wal-Mart on permits and infrastructure.
Forsyth public works director Alvin Randall told council
members at their regular meeting last Tuesday that Wal-
Mart plans to open its new Supercenter off Hwy. 42 in
about nine months. Randall said most of the site, located
behind the current Wal-Mart, has been cleared. He said
crews are now working to install sewer lines and storm
water drains.
Randall noted the store will use about three times the
amount of power it uses at its current location, apparent
ly good news for the city's electricity revenues.
County building official Bentley Cox said he's already
issued Wal-Mart a building permit. He said construction
will likely start in March, after they're finished digging
sewer and drain lines and grading. He agreed it should
be ready to open in October or November.
State patrol lobbies for new post
Troopers write $1 million a year in fines for the county
BY WILL DAVIS
Tickets written by the
Georgia State Patrol post
in Forsyth total almost $1
million a year for Monroe
County.
That's one reason Sgt.
Lee Major, commander of
the Forsyth post, asked
Monroe County commis
sioners again last week to
build a new headquarters
for them. Major assured
commissioners that they'll
get to reclaim the current
state patrol post and sur
rounding property if
they'll build one.
Commissioners have said
before they make any
committment they want to
ensure they'll regain own
ership of the current post.
Located off 1-75 on Patrol
Road behind Morgan Ford,
the county built the facili
ty and turned it over to
the GSP in 1970.
Major said state law
makers will soon
approve a reverter
clause giving the old
post to the county if a
new one is built. He also
came to update new
commission chairman
James Vaughn on past
negotiations between the
county and state patrol.
Major has said the cur
rent post is outdated
and needs replacing.
County commissioners
have set aside $500,000
in the current one-cent
sales tax (SPLOST) for a
new state patrol post.
But a brand-new facility
typically costs between
$1.5-$2 million. County
commissioners have
asked the GSP to devel
op a scaled-down version
of the post.
Vaughn called the post
an asset and said he'd
love to keep it in
Forsyth. But he said they
have to look after the
county's money, which is
"real tight."
Major said the state
patrol would serve Monroe
County no matter what
happens, but he noted
that all fines issued by
the state patrol go direct
ly into county coffers.
"We've probably paid for
the current patrol post 3-
4 times since 1970," said
Major. Major noted that
by building a post, the
county actually gets
something in return. "It's
not like you're building a
dog pound or something,"
said Major, drawing
chuckles from the audi
ence.
"That's an issue with us
right now," said commis
sioner Mike Bilderback.
"I didn't mean to say
that," joked Major.
Commissioners said they
would resume negotia
tions once lawmakers
approve the reverter
clause. Vickie Johnson, the
secretary at Forsyth’s GSP
post, said troopers wrote
4,766 tickets in Monroe
County in 2008. At an
average of $200 per ticket,
that would mean almost
$1 million going into the
county's general budget, if
all the fines were collect
ed.
