racecar
driver Beau Slocumb has
been diagnosed with can
cer and is undergoing
tests in Houston, Texas
this week.
Slocumb, 23, with his
parents Buster and
Jeanne, and girlfriend
Jessica, are at Houston's
M.D. Anderson Cancer
Center for tests. Slocumb
was diagnosed with a kind
of cancer common to
young people after he
began throwing up blood
earlier this month. Family
members said the
Slocumbs could be in
Houston as long as two
weeks.
A Bolingbroke resident,
Slocumb has been an
increasingly popular fig
ure on the racing circuit.
He's tallied up 129 feature
wins, most recently in the
ASA Late Model Series
Southern Division.
In December, Slocumb
made his ARCA ReMax
testing debut at the
Daytona International
Beau Slocumb and Sprint Cup driver Ryan Newman at a 2007 fundraiser hosted by Bass Pro Shops.
Speedway in Daytona
Beach, Fla. He posted the
fourth fastest time in one
session (183 mph) before
cutting down his right
rear tire, which sent him
spinning into the wall and
ended the testing.
On his way up the racing
circuit, Slocumb has
befriended NASCAR driv
er Ryan Newman. The two
have a common love of the
outdoors and have fished
together at Slocumb's
Bolingbroke pond.
Newman also hosted a
well-attended fundraiser
for Slocumb’s racing
efforts at the Bass Pro
Shop in north Macon in
2007.
Beau Slocumb attended
Mary Persons High
School.
A Middle Georgia min
istry called Project Giving
is raising funds to help
cover the $2,000 for the
Slocumbs' airfare to
Houston. Donations can be
made under the Slocumb
name to Project Giving,
