City taps Pitman
to run fall election
There'll be a new face in
charge of city council elections
this fall.
Forsyth's city council on Feb.
3 voted to name Monroe
County Election
Superintendent Karen Pitman
as the election superintendent
for the city as well. That's a
change from years past, when
the city clerk, currently Janice
Hall, has run city elections.
Having the city clerk run the
elections came under criticism
in 2007 when Hall had to rule
on protests against the resi
dency of mayoral candidate
James Green. Some of the
protests against Green’s resi
dency were filed by city council
members. Green complained
that was a conflict of interest.
Hall ruled that Green's pri
mary residence was his River
Forest home and he was dis
qualified.
Three city council incum
bents will be up for re-election,
Mike Dodd, Lamar Russell and
Rosemary Walker. It is expect
ed that all three would run
again. Qualifying is Aug. 31-
Sept. 4 and the election is Nov.
3. Council set the qualifying
fees for council members at
$189.
The city will still have to fig
ure out what to do about early
voting, since it last 40 days
instead of one week.
In other council news:
• Council approved the clos
ing of Jackson St. on April 16
beginning at 6:30 p.m. The
street will be closed in con
junction with the Noodles for
Poodles/Save A Pet fundraiser
at Grits Cafe.
• Council approved the
advertising of the closing of
the two small railroad cross
ings on Indian Springs Drive.
Norfolk Southern will provide
funding for the permanent
closing of these two crossings.
• You can no longer be buried
in city cemeteries without at
least a pine box. City council
members voted last Tuesday to
amend a city law on burial
containers and vaults.
Apparently the law didn’t
require people to be buried in
a vault or container. But it
does now. City officials said
the funeral homes do require
bodies be buried in containers
but said the law did not cover
that beforehand.

8-car pile
up on 1-75
Saturday
Traffic was backed up for
about an hour on 1-75
northbound on the evening
of Saturday, Feb. 14 in
southern Monroe County.
That after eight vehicles,
including a tractor trailer,
were involved in an acci
dent around 6:30 p.m.
Monroe County Sheriffs
Office deputies were trying
to clear the northbound
lane of 1-75 near mile
marker 179 of an accident
when a tractor trailer
plowed into several cars
that were trying to merge.
The cars were merging to
avoid EMS and deputies
working the one-car acci
dent.
The original accident was
blocking lanes of travel,
forcing other cars to move
over into the two right
lanes. A Chevrolet truck
pulling a flat-bed trailer
stopped after merging,
causing cars traveling
behind the truck to stop.
The driver of the Chevy
truck, Raymond Cochran of
Franklin, N.C., told the
Reporter he stopped
because he couldn't merge
with traffic. The tractor
trailer hit several of those
cars causing them to rear-
end other cars stopped in
merging traffic. In total,
seven cars plus the tractor
trailer were damaged and
all four lanes of 1-75 were
shut down until 8 p.m.
when two lanes were
cleared. All four lanes were
opened around 8:20.
Four people were trans
ported to the Medical
Center with non life-
threatening injuries.
No charges are expected
to be filed and no other
information is available at
this time.

Monroe County Opinion Poll
Commissioner Jim Ham says the
assessors office and water depart
ment could both show a little better
work ethic. What gives?
He's right - some people 23 votes
just don't want to work. 57 percent
They should chew tobacco 2 votes
- then they wouldn't need a 5 percent
smoke break.
Who expects government 9 votes
employees to bust a gut 23 percent
anyway?
Cut them some slack - it's 6 votes
not like the county pays 15 percent
great wages.

- Communication occurs in the brain.
- When we lose our ability to hear, the ear stops
sending needed information to the brain, affecting
the ability to understand what is being said.
- “Auditory Deprivation”, can impair the way
the brain processes sound.
- The solution is hearing aids; sending the correct
information to the brain, protecting it from atrophy.
