Pastor’s Column
Short: Could apply to life
G reen bean is a
term used to la
bel all new sol
diers arriving in
South Korea who
were beginning their short one
year overseas tour. Actually,
anybody who has fewer days to
serve than you can
call you a “green
bean.”
As your tour is
coming to an end,
your replacement
is called a "turtle.
Perhaps that is
because it seems
that they are so
slow in get
ting in
country.
A fre
quent topic
of conversa
tion among some U.S. serv
ice members on their short
tour is, "How many days do
you have left?" The
answer is sometimes found
in various public places.
Or the echo of "short! ...
"('Short' means their tour
is almost over.) can be
heard across the camp.
"I've got 150 days," says
one soldier; "I've got 30,"
replies another.
One day I asked an offi
cer how many days he had
left and he said, "20."
"Gee, you're really short," I
replied. "I have 20 week
ends, not days. The time
goes faster when I count
that way."
One morning at break
fast, a lieutenant walked
into the dining facility
grinning from ear to ear.
He gleefully exclaimed,
"I'm a one-digit midget."
That meant he had 9 or
fewer days left in
country.
My overseas
tour made me
appreciate the
United States and
how blessed I
was to live in
such a great
country. Even I
have begun
to count
the days to
my return
stateside.
Would you
believe 119?
How many days do you
have left? 180, 90, or 30?
Have you asked yourself a
more serious question late
ly, "How many days or
years do I have left to
live?"
James, the New
Testament writer, summa
rized the brevity of life:
"What is your life? For
you are a mist that
appears for a little time
and then vanishes."
(James 4:14) The short
ness of life comes home to
me every time I conduct a
memorial service for a
young soldier. They had
looked forward to a life
filled with may days and
years.
"My days are swifter
than a runner; they flee
away, they see no good."
(Job 9:25)
Today is the best day of
your life. It is precious;
tomorrow may never come.
Let's concentrate our
thoughts on the day at
hand. St. Paul gave some
sound advice for living: "If
possible, so far as it
depends upon you, live
peaceably with all."
(Romans 12; 18) Jesus said,
"You shall love the Lord
your God...and love your
neighbor as yourself."
(Luke 10:27)
Short? How many days
do you have left on your
tour of duty on earth? Are
you sure? Make the best of
the day you have before
you and be at peace with
others and God.

Folate (Folic Acid) and Heart Attacks
Folate is a naturally occurring water soluble B vitamin found
in many foods such as green vegetables, fruits, cereals, and
dried beans. Folic acid is a man-made form folate that comes in
some dietary supplements. Folate is essential for the body to
produce and maintain new cells such as red blood cells. Folate
also helps maintain normal levels of homocysteine. Elevated
homcysteine levels have been associated with an increased risk
of developing heart disease.
Folate has been studied for many uses including it’s use in the
prevention of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and heart disease.
One recent study evaluated the ability of high-dose folic acid to
prevent damage to heart from a heart attack in test animals.
The animals who received folic acid experienced smaller, less
damaging heart attacks than the animals that did not. Studies
examining the ability of folic acid to prevent heart attacks in
humans have been conflicting. Additionally, high-dose folic acid
supplements has not been evaluated in humans. More studies
are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of high-dose folic acid
to reduce damage from heart attacks in humans.
