PAGE IB March 11, 2009 The best coverage for Monroe County sports M P shuts out Jhckson three times in two days MP Soccer Dogs 6, Jackson 0 MP Lady Soccer Dogs 8, Jackson 0 MP JV baseball 7, Jackson 0 BY GINA HERRING The Mary Persons soccer teams teamed up to offer two-thirds of a three- game, combined 21-0 shut out of the Red Devils last week. On Tuesday, March 3, Jackson came to the Cage at Lancaster Field and left with their pointy little tails between their legs. First the Lady Dogs gave them a firm whipping, winning 8-0. Hilary Hogg scored four goals, Rachel Davis scored two and Lauren Perez and Sydney Boykin each scored one. It didn’t get much easier for the Red Devils in the boys game. Goals from Candler Proffitt, Kevin Phelan, Philip Lee, Matthew Daniel, James Brooks and Ryan English and perfection on the defense gave MP another shutout, 6-0 over Jackson. On Saturday, MP hosted Maynard Jackson out of Atlanta. The mercy rule was evoked for the second time this year when MP went ahead 10-0 in the second half. The Maynard Jackson girls only fielded nine players. Perez had scored goals in less than 4 min utes of play with the third goal assisted by Sarah Bennett. Courtney Archer picked up fourth goal off a free kick due to a penalty against Maynard Jackson. Just 20 minutes into the game Coach Herr substi tuted players en masse, except for goalie, Amber Sawley. Playing down in num bers to match Maynard Jackson the second group continued scoring with Jessica Horne scoring at 24:10. Moments later Sam Buchanan scores her first of the game and followed with another, assisted by Bridgett Buff at 17:39. A handball in the box on Maynard Jackson set up a PK by Lauren Mimbs to put the Lady Dawgs up 8- 0. Laura Becceril scored less than a minute later at 15:15. The game ended just over five minutes later when Lauren Mimbs put one in the net to mercy rule Maynard Jackson 10-0 in less than 30 minutes. Lady Dawgs are now 8-0 outscoring opponents 56-3 and have 7 shutouts, but the challeng ing opponents are still to come. The Buloldogs also shutout Maynard Jackson, 7-0, with Kevin Phelan, Philip Lee (2), Erik Haygood, Candler Proffitt, Dalton Rozier and Tait Torstenson scoring goals. On Tuesday MP travels to Stockbridge to face a tough Woodland team. Girls paly at 5:30 p.m., fol lowed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. IN JUNIOR VARSITY action the girls won 4-0 over Peach County On Friday. Samantha Buchanan scored all 4 goals. Earlier in the week both the JV girls and boys bwon. The girls shutout Griffin 5-0 with Samantha Buchanan (3), and Laura Corley (2) scoring goals. The JV boys won 3-0 with Brian Wojcio (2), and J.J. Pittman scoring goals. BOTH C TEAMS won over Henderson Middle School on Friday and Oak Hill on Saturday. The girls won 5-0 against Henderson and the boys beat Henderson 8-1 (mak ing this two more Jackson wins for the Bulldogs). On Saturday, the c-team girls beat Oakhill 6-1,. The c- team boys won 9-0 over Oakhill. PART THREE OF THE JACKCON shutout came Wednesday as MP’s junior varsity Bulldog baseball team stomped the Red Devils 7-0. The JV Dogs are 3-0. On Feb. 25 they won over Baldwin 7-2 and on March 6 beat Monticello 23-0. Trey Barfield and T.J. Morgan combined to pitch a one- hitter in the win over Monticello. Below: Rachel Davis (18) scored two goals in the win over Jackson last week, (file photos) MP tennis teams split tourney matches M P golf The MP boys beat Montgomery County in the first match of the Bleckley County tournament last week, 4-1, with wins from Jacob Marcy, Kaleb Lee, Steven Wojcio, Houston Cass and James Farmer. The team of McClellan and Brock lost a heart breaker in a very close match that went down to the wire. In the second match Telfair Co. beat MP 1-4 with the only victory from Marcy at the number one singles position. In the first match for the girls, MP won 5-0 over Montgomery County with wins from Whitney Maples, Caitlin Hill, Autumn Garland at Singles, Catie Maples, Marleigh Dennis and Charlsie Johnson, Kayla Ray at doubles In the second match vs. Telfair Co., MP lost 1-4 with the only win coming from the team Catie Maples and Marleigh Dennis. Both girls and boys lost to Woodward 0-5 last week. Leading scorers were: Kevin Gomez 39 Trey Epps 40 Drew Coleman 43 Daniel Weeks 45 The Girl's team also beat Jackson 105-124 to improve to 2-0-1 on the year. (Photo/Gina Herring) Dogs set school strikeout record MP trounces competition in Diamond, Day games after suffering first loss of season BY GINA HERRING Mary Persons pitcher Jay Wiliams set a school record Saturday, striking out 18 batters in the Bulldogs' 11- 2 victory over Manchester in the annual Diamond Day hosted by MP. Leading MP at the plate were Justin Kearney (2-3), Brandyn Jackson (2-4), Dakota Dobbs (2-4) and Jake Justice (3-3). The Bulldogs began the day with a 7-0 win over Baldwin. Bobby Ramage pitched a complete game. Leading hitters included Kearney (2-4), Andrew Arp (1-2) and Ramage (2-3). The Bulldogs suffered their first loss Thursday to Upson-Lee, 3-1. After Upson-Lee jumped ahead 3-0 in the third inning, the Bulldogs couldn't come back. Kenny Peterman started on the mound and was relieved in the fourth by Ramage. JAY WILLIAMS The Bulldogs started region play this week, los ing to Rutland 2-0 on the road Monday night. The Bulldogs will be on the road for the next 10 days, playing Westside on Tuesday, Maynard Jackson on Wednesday and Howard on Friday. All games begin at 5:30 p.m. A group of "Future Bulldogs" watching in amazement as Williams sets a school strikeout record Saturday. On your mark, get set, go! Special Olympics is March 20 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Hard times got you down? Well, get ready to have a great day that will make you forget about all your trou bles - at least for a few hours. The Monroe County Special Olympics is Friday, March 20. Volunteers are still needed to help escort athletes, help with certain events and cheer them on. The fun starts around 9 a.m. and lasts until around 1 p.m. To volunteer or for more information see Caroline LaBorde at T.G.
