Hancock, grandson
return to JLiliette Opry
Bluegrass picker and humorist Joey
Hancock will return to the Juliette Opry on
Saturday night, this time with his talented
16-year-old grandson, Preston Pugh. The
concert is free.
Hancock packed the Opry back on Sept. 5
when he brought his Camo Collar Tour to
the Juliette Opry. A large crowd enjoyed
Hancock’s mix of mandolin tunes and down-
home humor.
The Grayson, Ga. motivational speaker,
musician and Georgia Author of the Year
will be back in Juliette on Saturday, Nov. 7.
Before heading to the Opry, Hancock will
sign copies of his book “Success Afield
Principles for a Sportsman's Life” starting at
5:30 p.m. at the Whistle Stop Cafe. The
Whistle Stop will be offering free fried green
tomatoes with each order.
Then Hancock and The Passin' Thru String
Band will play an acoustical set right there
in the famous restaurant. Then at 7 p.m.
Hancock and his grandson will play at the
Opry . Pugh began playing the guitar and
mandolin at the age of 10. Soon, he was
playing with the bluegrass band “Grayson
Blue”. A year later The Morgan Monroe
Acoustic Instrument company outfitted
Preston with his first “F-Style” mandolin and
added him as a company Endorsement
Artist. He is a member of the Grayson High
School Philharmonic Orchestra where he

Preston has played on stages throughout
the south from Kentucky to Florida. At age
13 he was featured at the Jerusalem Ridge
Bluegrass Festival (RFD-TV Cumberland
Highlanders Show) at the home place of Bill
Monroe, Rosine, Kentucky. Grammy winning
mandolin artist (“Oh, Brother Where Art
Thou”) Mike Compton has befriended
Preston and has helped guide him.
Preston began traveling and going on stage
with his grandfather at 10 years old and
together they have appeared at many
churches, Opry Houses and bluegrass ven
ues.
Hancock has friends in the Monroe County
area, having served as interim pastor of
Vineville North Baptist Church (Northway
Church) on Zebulon Road.

Brooks cousins reunite
Last month 12 of the 16 grand
children of George Colquitt and
Lillie Cannon Brooks gathered at
232 Montpelier Avenue, the home
“Col” and Lillie bought in 1920. The
cousins enjoyed a time of reminisc
ing, reacquainting, and relating
tales, both tall and true.
Rob Roy MacGregor, Merle’s son,
mastermined this reunion. He said
he had wanted for years to get
everyone together. Since Phylis
Chloe, Melba’s daughter, plans to
sell the “old homeplace,”he decided
it was “now or never”.
“Col” and Lillie, natives of Monroe
County, had eight children: Clinton,
Verna, Cuyler, Oliver, Merle, Melba,
George and Amy Ruth. They all
attended Mary Persons school.
They led productive, successful
lives across the country, and had 16
grandchildren.
Those attending were: Molly,
daughter of Clinton; Conrad and
Catherine Planas, children of
Verna; Ned, Dan Brooks, and Mary
Linda (Brooks) McCarthy, children
of Cuyler; Rob Roy MacGregor and
Martha (MacGregor) Brodnax, chil
dren of Merle; Phylis Chloe
(Shuttleworth) Bird, daughter of
Melba; Barbara (Brooks) Cooper,
daughter of George; Elaine Koogler
and Cindy (Koogler) Bryant,
daughters of Amy Ruth. Catherine
Planas was accompanied by her
niece, Donna Parrish. Rob Roy,
Martha, Barbara, and Cindy were
accompanied by their spouses. The
only member of the eight children’s
generation, Mary (Lester) Brooks,
wife of Cuyler, and mother of Ned,
Dan, and Mary Linda, came from
Atlanta - at the age of 100! She
turned 101 on Oct. 30.
The oldest grandchild, Patricia
(Planas) Parrish, was physically
unable to come from Philadelphia.
Three of the 16 have passed away:
Kern, son of Oliver; Philip and
James, sons of Melba.
On Sunday, the group gathered
on “Grandpa’s front porch” at 232
Montpelier Avenue for a dinner of
“Grandma’s cooking” provided by
Martha Brodnax, who grew, washed
and cooked turnip greens, and
brought sweet potatoes from
Mississippi. She also provided field
corn which Phylis Bird stewed “like
Grandma did.” The keystone of the
menu “Grandpa’s barbeque” was
served with blackeyed peas and
“soakbread,” finished off with
Grandma’s peach cobbler, caramel
cake, and blueberry crumble.
After dinner, they sat around and
shared highlights since last they
had seen each other and many
memories of experiences with their
parents and Grandma and
Grandpa.
