Dr. Perry wins
in state tourney
Dr. Tom Perry of Forsyth, playing with a team from
Augusta, helped win the state 60-and-over doubles
tennis state championship recently in Savannah. The
team will compete in regional matches next March in
Birmingham against the winners from seven other
southern states.
Perry triumphed in each of his five matches without
the loss of a set in the three day meet on Skidaway
Island against teams from Atlanta, Columbus,
Savannah and Lake Oconee.
Only one glitch marred the trip-the drawbridge
allowing traffic to and from the island after Sunday's
finale became locked in the "up" position, causing
delay and a late return to Forsyth.

With Spalding loss, Dawgs
need help to make playoffs
Hope Woodland beats Woodward
BY GINA HERRING
A mid the fog
and mist, the
Mary Persons
Bulldogs self-
destructed
Friday night against
Spalding County. The re
sult - a 21-0 loss.
"We just could not
make plays," said Coach
Rodney Walker. "As
excited as we were last
week beating Woodward,
we are just as disap
pointed this week losing
to Spalding."
Walker said he tried to
warn the team not to get
too confident.
"The truth is they
[Spalding] were ready,
we were not," said
Walker.
The game began posi
tively enough. The MP
defense held the Jags on
third and nine at the MP
31 yard line, forcing
Spalding to go for a field
goal. Querry Henderson
got his hands on the ball
and blocked the field
goal.
But that was just
about where the luck
ran out for the Dogs. The
offense could not get it
together, despite a few
good plays in the first
half, including a 21-yard
catch by Corey Head
pushing the Dogs into
Jaguar territory.
After a drive to the
Spalding 28-yard line,
the Dogs could not con
vert and handed it over
on downs. On the Jags
first snap, a 72 yard
pass reception landed
them in the endzone for
six points. The extra
point was good and

Spalding had the lead, 7-
0.
On their next posses
sion the Bulldogs fum
bled the ball away at
their own 39-yard line, a
mistake which led to a
second Spalding touch
down.
Spalding added one
more in the second quar
ter and led 21-0 at half
time.
The faithful fans who
braved the foggy, damp
night to cheer on the
Dogs prayed for a sec
ond-half comeback like
they've seen several
times this season. But,
the second half was
worse than the first.
MP's quarterback
Dustin Calder was
sacked numerous times.
Go-to guy Meshari
Walton got nowhere. The
Dogs made it into
Jaguar territory late in
the third but turned it
over on downs at the
Jaguar 25.
