Dogs win final game,
but lose out on playoffs
BY GINA HERRING
he Mary Persons Bulldogs did
what they had to do Friday
night, stomping the Jaguars of
Maynard Jackson, 37-0. But
the Dogs will not be playing in
the playoffs this year. That’s because
Woodward beat Woodland Friday night.
The win put Woodward in second place
with a region record of 6-2. Woodland,
also 6-2, ends up in third place. Spalding
and MP both end the season with a 5-3
region record, but since Spalding beat
MP, the Jaguars end up in fourth place
and MP is fifth. Jackson, a perfect 8-0 in
region 4AAA, is in first place. Only the
top four teams advance to the playoffs, so
MP is done for the season.
The Bulldogs were ecstatic after beat
ing the Jaguars so handily, but the joy
soon turned to grief as they learned
their fate following the game.
The season started with a great deal
of uncertainty. The Bulldogs had lost a
lot of key players to graduation and
Coach Rodney Walker admitted that
2009 would be a struggle. The Bulldogs
had to overcome a lot of youth and
inexperience. They also lost several key
players, including their center, star
running back and several other key
players, to injuries. It seemed like an
uphill battle all the way.
But, after the final whistle blew on
Friday, Walker said he could not be
prouder of his 2009 Bulldogs.
Walker has said time and time again

the 11-12 year old champs, beating the Seminoles 20-13. On Sunday the Recreation cheer-off
