Education in the News
Farm Bureau to award
agriculture scholarships
Georgia Farm Bureau will award a
total of $14,250 in scholarships to 10
high school seniors who plan to pur
sue a college degree in agriculture,
family and consumer sciences, or a
related field, Barry Peters, Monroe
County Farm Bureau president,
recently announced.
The top three students will each
receive a scholarship of $3,000. The
remaining seven students will each
receive a $750 scholarship. Students
are eligible to submit an application if
they, a parent or legal guardian were
a member of Georgia Farm Bureau as
of Sept. 1, 2009. The scholarships are
sponsored by the Georgia Farm
Bureau Mutual Insurance Company
in cooperation with the Georgia Farm
Bureau Women’s Committee.
Applicants must plan to enter a unit
of the University System of Georgia or
Berry College during the 2010-11 aca
demic year to pursue an undergradu
ate degree in agricultural and envi
ronmental sciences, family and con
sumer sciences or a related agricultur
al field.
All applications must be submitted
by Friday, February 26, 2010.

gram or to obtain an application.
Applications may also be downloaded
at www.gfb.org. Select GFB Programs,
then Ag in the Classroom. The appli
cation includes a list of all the
University System of Georgia
Institutions students may attend to
qualify for the scholarship and exam
ples of qualifying majors. All scholar
ship applications must be approved
and signed by the Farm Bureau presi
dent of the county where Farm
Bureau membership is held before
being submitted to the Georgia Farm
Bureau home office.
The scholarship recipients will be
announced in May 2010.
Georgia Farm Bureau is the state’s
largest general farm organization. Its
volunteer members actively partici
pate in local, district and state activi
ties that promote agriculture aware
ness to their non-farming neighbors.
GFB also has 20 commodity advisory
committees that give the organization
input on issues pertinent to the major
commodities grown in Georgia.
HES Jr. Beta donates to Save A Pet
The officers of the Hubbard Ele
mentary Junior Beta Club, on
behalf of all club members, re
cently presented a check for
$200 to Save A Pet. The dona
tion was made from funds
raised at the club-sponsored
"Spring Fling" last May. Pic

Hamson scholarship applications available
Southern Rivers Energy is accepting
applications for the prestigious Walter
Harrison Scholarship program spon
sored by Georgia's EMCs. SRE sub
mits one local application to the
statewide scholarship competition
each year.
The $1,000 scholarship can be used
toward academic expenses at any
accredited two- or four-year university,
college or vocational-technical insti
tute in Georgia.
Nine scholarships will be awarded in
2010. A scholarship committee made
up of directors and managers from
Georgia EMCs will consider grade
point average, SAT scores, academic
standing, scholastic honors, and finan
cial circumstances when judging the
applications.
Students applying for the scholar
ship must be accepted or enrolled in
an accredited undergraduate degree
program, complete a two-page applica
tion, and write a two-page autobio
graphical sketch that includes future
plans and a short statement about
why the scholarship would be helpful.
The scholarship is available to any
college level student regardless of age.

UGA with masters
Kellis Johnson Boland
graduated from the
University of Georgia in
Athens on August 1 with
her Master’s degree in
Agricultural Leadership.
Kellis is currently
teaching Leadership
Development to under
graduate students at
Troy University in Troy,
Alabama. She is also a
doctoral student at
Auburn University in
pursuit of her Ph.D. in
Career and Technical
Education.
Kellis is a 2002 gradu
ate of Mary Persons High
School and is the daugh
ter of Doug and Karen
Johnson of Forsyth.

Allen Stroupe of
Forsyth has been named
to the summer quarter
2009 President’s List at
Griffin Technical College.
In order to obtain this
distinction, a student

Local students participate in lamb show
Monroe County lamb show participants included 4-H and FFA mem
bers.
The 2009 Middle Georgia Market
Lamb Show was held at the
Monroe County Recreation
Department Rodeo Arena on Sept.
26. 4-H and FFA members from
Butts, Lamar, Spalding, Pike,
Monroe, and Upson counties were
invited to participate. In all there
were 20 exhibitors who showed 32
lambs.
The judge for this year’s show
was Anna Daniels, a former mem
ber of the Butts County 4-H where
she exhibited lambs for many
years. She is now in veterinary
school at Auburn University.
The show started with showman
ship, where the student is judged
on his ability to exhibit a lamb and
the knowledge that they have of
their project. Nine exhibitors par
ticipated in Senior Showmanship
with Timi Webb of Pike County 4-
H coming out on top. Kaylynn
Phillips of Mary Persons FFA
placed second. Third - fifth places
were Gabrielle Hay, Keith
Pippens, and Tera Teal, all of
Upson-Lee FFA.
There were 10 participants in
Junior Showmanship. Jessica
White of Monroe County 4-H won
this class. In second place was
TulaBlue Waldrep, also from
Monroe County 4-H. Her sister,
Caroline Waldrep of Monroe
County 4-H, placed fourth, and fel
low Monroe County 4-H’er Chelsea
Williams was fifth. In third place
was Gabe Parker of Lamar County
4-H.
