William Hubbard Middle School
WHMS receives award for
improving science scores
William M. Hubbard Middle School
has been awarded the
Superintendent's Distinguished
Achievement Award in the area of
eighth grade Science. Hubbard
Middle is one of ten schools in the
state to receive this honor based on
CRCT gains made in eighth grade
science during the spring 2009 test
ing. "We are honoring schools that
showed the greatest improvement
and highest achievement on our
state tests," said State
Superintendent of Schools Kathy
Cox. "These awards are just a small
way of saying "thank you" for the
hard work put in by our teachers,
students and school communities.
Congratulations to all the winners!"
Steve Edwards, WHMS Principal,
stated, "I am extremely proud of our
teachers and students for receiving
this award. It's truly a testament of
the hard work, dedication, and sacri
fices made to ensure that students
are learning and improving on a
daily basis."

Homecoming and red ribbons
By Abby Owen
The students at WHMS celebrated Red
Ribbon Week October 19-23 to coincide
with the MPHS Homecoming. It was a
week that students explored the serious
ness, consequences, and side effects of
drugs. The week began by students
learning the history of Red Ribbon Week
and making bumper stickers. We signed
pledge cards committing to be drug-free
and displayed them on our classroom
doors. Other events for the week includ
ed a “wear red” day, don’t be a “dum
dum” day on which students were given
dum-dum suckers to demonstrate drug
awareness, tacky day showing what we
could look like if we abuse drugs, and a
pep rally supporting the MPHS
Bulldogs. It was a great week for both
students and staff.
Have dessert under the stars
Hubbard Middle School is having a
special science night “Dessert Under
the Stars” from 6-7:30 pm on
Thursday, Nov. 12 in the cafeteria.
The event will include a variety of
activities that deal with the science
curriculums, including earth, life
and physical science. Steve Bentley,
an expert in the field of astronomy,
will be the special guest. Bentley’s
granddaughter also attends Hubbard
Middle School.
Ms. Traylor from Georgia Youth
Science and Technology Centers will
also be on campus and will have her
portable Star Lab set up in the cafe
teria. She is also bringing a Van de
Graff Generator. Both life and physi
cal science areas will have exciting
demonstrations and activities for
everyone to participate in.
Battle rallies students
to succeed
Former MP alumni Tra Battle came and spoke to
students at the WHMS Pep Rally about their fu
tures and what they need to focus on to suc
ceed. He shared about his experiences as a
Georgia Bulldog and Dallas Cowboy football
player. He said that although athletics are im
portant, academics is where it’s at. His mes
sage was well received and the students had
good things to say about what they learned.
