Family: ‘We got our miracle’
Struck MP freshman is walking, eating Mexican
food and singing along to Japanese rap music
BY WILL DAVIS
The 14-year
Mary Persons
freshman who
suffered brain
injuries after
being hit by a
car on Oct. 27
is walking,
eating Mexican
food and
singing along
to her favorite
Japanese rap
songs.
"She's improving so
much it's kind of amaz
ing," said Dusty Ligeikis,
the step-mother of 14-
year-old Christiina
Ligeikis. "We got our
miracle."
Christina was expected
to be transferred from
the Medical Center in
Macon to Scottish Rite
Children's Hospital in
Atlanta for rehab on
Monday or Tuesday.
She'll stay there 2-3
weeks. The transfer is
possible because
Christina's condition has
improved dramatically. A
week ago she was in an
induced coma and on a
ventilator, and doctors
had removed a piece of
her skull to allow for
brain swelling from her
injuries. Christina
was trying to dart
across Brooklyn
Avenue to return
to the Freshman
Campus at Mary
Persons after pick
ing up a forgotten
item at home. She
apparently didn't
see a car coming
and was struck.
But she's come a
long way since then.
"It amazes me to see
where she was two
weeks ago to now," said
Dusty Ligeikis.
Ligeikis said Christina
recognizes her closest
family members and
friends, and wrote a note
with a drawing of herself
to her siblings. They
haven't been able to see
Christina due to strict
new hospital visitation
rules.
Dusty Ligeikis said
they have been con
cerned because she has
n't each much hospital
food, and has lost about
20 pounds since being
hospitalized. They were
relieved though, said
Ligeikis, when her moth
er, Miniver Roberts,
took her food from the El
Tejado Mexican
Restaurant in Forsyth,
she ate it all.
"I think she just does
n't like the hospital
food," said Ligeikis.
Dusty Ligeikis said
they hope rehab will
help with Christina's
short-term memory. She
has asked repeatedly
what happened to her
and doesn't seem to
remember when people
tell her.
"It's kind of hard to
keep telling her what
happened," said Dusty
Ligeikis.
But doctors say her
memory will vastly
improve with physical
therapy.
Christina is walking
some but must wear a
helmet until doctors re
attach the piece of skull
they removed in about 3-
6 months.
But there are clear
signs she's the same
Christina.
While she's half
Chinese, she still loves
her favorite music,
Japanese rap, and "any
other music I can't
LIGEIKIS
understand," joked
Dusty Ligeikis. Still,
Christina will probably
not to return to school
this year, though she's
improving so fast her
parents don't rule it out.
Meanwhile, Dusty
Ligeikis said their hearts
go out to the driver in
the accident. The woman
has called and checked
on Christina and is obvi
ously worried about her.
Dusty said they want to
assure her they're not
mad at her and that they
know it was an accident.

Gini Seitz joins
the Reporter
Former Telegraph
manager serving
businesses outside
of Monroe County
The Monroe County
Reporter has named Gini
Seitz as one of the news
paper's advertising repre
sentatives.
A Forsyth native, Seitz had
been the on-line sales manager at the Macon
Telegraph for the past two years before joining the
Reporter.
"We're thrilled to have Gini on board," said Will
Davis, editor of the Reporter. "To be able to hire a
Forsyth native with experience at a large newspa
per, along with her positive attitude and work
ethic, is a real plus.
Seitz will be helping businesses outside of
Monroe County attract more customers through
the newspaper and its website, www.mymcr.net.
"I'm excited about helping businesses, especially
with all the growth that's coming to Monroe
County," said Seitz.
With its community focus on local people, fami
lies and kids, Seitz said she's happy to be working
for the Reporter. "The difference between a daily
and a weekly newspaper is that hometown feel,"
said Seitz. "People get to see their kids in the
paper here."
Seitz will work closely with the Reporter's long
time advertising representative Carolyn Martel,
who helps Monroe County businesses with their
marketing needs.
Seitz and her husband Dave have three daugh
ters, Halie, Cadi and Kylie. Over the past year,
Seitz has stayed at home — and often at the hospi
tal - while her youngest daughter, Kylie, has been
undergoing treatment for cancer in her leg. But
now that Kylie is done with treatment and back in
school, Seitz said she's glad to be able to get back
into the work routine.
Seitz said she also likes the fact that her job is
part-time, which gives her the flexibility to take
care of family when needs arise.
A graduate of Georgia College and State
University in Millegeville with a degree in busi
ness, Seitz graduated from Mary Persons in 1989.
She is the daughter of Bob and Martha Cass of
Forsyth. The Seitzes are members of Maynard
Baptist Church.
