Troop 51 produces 10 Eagles in two years
In its 99 year his
tory there have only
been 80 young men
who have achieved
the rank of Eagle
Scout in Boy Scout
Troop 51 of Forsyth.
In the last two
years, Boy Scout
Troop 51 of Forsyth
has been privileged
to award the rank
of Eagle Scout to a
record number of
young men in our
community — 10 in
all. They are Aaron
Farmer, Chris
Mountain
Harrelson, Sid
Grigsby, Taylor
Johnston, Byron
Blackmon, Seth
Van Huss, Bo
Dungan, Bladen
Steed, Taylor Pope
and Josh Collins.
Their combined
Eagle Scout
Leadership Service
Projects represent
over 1100 hours of
service to our com
munity.
When a young
man achieves the
rank of Eagle
Scout, he has dedicated
at least four years of his
life, and usually much
more, to completing a
strict list of requirements
outlined by the National
Boy Scouts of America
(BSA). These require
ments involve service,
leadership, education

and lots of planning and
paperwork. Technically, it
doesn’t sound like fun, so
why does any young man
pursue the coveted Eagle
Scout Award?
Some follow in their
father’s footsteps. Some
young men believe it
challenges them to do
things they wouldn’t oth
erwise do. Some realize it
can help them later in
life; that being an Eagle
Scout is respected. Some
believe it will make them
a better man. Regardless
of the reason for going
into the process, Eagle
Scouts agree it is impor
tant.
Boy Scouting is, in the
words of its founder
Lord Robert Baden
Powell, “A game
with a purpose.” A
young man who has
earned the rank of
Eagle has complet
ed all of the techni
cal requirements
while participating
in a coming-of-age
“game.” This
“game” encourages
him to attend com
munity meetings,
carry “Old Glory” in
patriotic parades
and prayer services,
and conquer outdoor
challenges.
To achieve Eagle,
he has also earned a
minimum of 21
merit badges.
Twelve of these are
mandatory Eagle-
required badges
geared towards
making him a self-
sufficient, well-
rounded citizen and
communicator.
These mandatory
badges include citi
zenship in the com
munity, nation and
world; personal
management; personal
fitness; family life; first
aid; emergency prepared
ness/lifesaving; camping;
environmental science;
communications and
cycling, hiking, swim
ming.
In addition to complet
ing those Eagle-required
badges, the Eagle Scout
completed a minimum of
9 elective merit badges
from over 100 offered by
BSA, including Medicine,
Law, Photography,
Chemistry, Aviation,
Energy and Engineering.
These elective badges are
geared toward helping
young men target con
structive hobbies and
possibly careers that will
last a lifetime. Notably,
many Eagle Scouts sur
pass the 9 minimum elec
tive badges and earn 25
or more, “because, it is
fun!”
After finishing the tech
nical requirements and
earning their merit
badges, Eagle Scout can
didates must pass the
final two tests - a
Scoutmaster Conference
and a Board of Review.
Their success at passing
these final tests depends
on their history with fel
low scouts and leaders.
Have they done their
best to do their duty to
God and their Country?
Have they obeyed the
Scout Law? Have they
been “trustworthy, loyal,
helpful, friendly, courte
ous, kind, obedient,
cheerful, thrifty, brave,
clean and reverent?” Do
they “do a good turn
daily,” as the scout motto
states, without expecta
tion of recognition and
honor?
Are they prepared?
Yes! These ten young
men are and Troop 51
proudly presents them to
our community with
much confidence and
hope that they will con
tinue their service to
their families, God, their
community, their country
and their world.

Hospital bars
visitors under
age 17 during
flu season
Children under 17 years
old will no longer be able
to visit relatives at
Monroe County Hospital,
a policy recommended by
the Center for Disease
Control (CDC) and the
North Central Health
District. The policy was
effective Nov. 2.
According to the CDC,
children ages 0-16 are
more likely to acquire
and spread the flu and
more likely to be hospi
talized.
For those 17 years of
age or older, visiting with
a patient who has cold or
flu-like symptoms or
diagnosis, it is recom
mended that the visitor
obtain a mask to wear
from the nurses station
on the second floor, or
from the admissions area
of the Emergency
Department, prior to vis
iting with the patient.

lanes closed
for road work
Monroe County drivers
can expect delays on
Hwy. 42 South this week.
That’s because
Department of
Transportation crews will
be resurfacing the north
bound lanes. Drivers
should expect delays
beginning north of Hwy.
74 near Russellville and
continuing to Hwy. 18 in
Forsyth. The work is
expected to continue
through Friday, Nov. 13.
This is a work zone and
the DOT requests drivers
to show extreme caution.
Motorists are advised to
slow down as they travel
through this work zone.
Message signs, barrels
and cones will be utilized
to alert the public of the
upcoming changes.
