A few of Forsyth’s veterans who were honored by Ann’s Deli on Veteran’s Day with a Veteran’s
Day cake at Ann’s Deli: John Hilson, Army National Guard; Charles Hampton, U.S. Army; Mercer
Bush, U.S. Marines; Ernest Jackson, U.S. Navy (ret); Tom Benson, U.S. Army.
Vets honored at Ann’s
S ome may have forgotten but
it started with the 11th
hour of the 11th day of the
11th month. At that time it
was known as Armistice Day and
celebrated the end of hostilities in WWI.
Since then it has changed to a day to honor
all veterans who have served in the armed
forces of the United States. With operation
Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and
the Afghan War, the significance of the day
has grown during which many people seek to
honor those who have served. Many are
more cognizant of and desirous of honoring
those who volunteer and sacrifice for the free
dom all Americans enjoy.
Ann’s Deli has joined in this effort
and like many restaurants offers free
treats to veterans as a part of the coun
try’s efforts to thank and honor those
who have served and are serving. Ann
Matich, the owner of Ann’s Deli and an
accomplished cake and pie baker, cele
brates the day by baking a sheet cake
and decorating it as an American flag.
Vets are then encouraged to come by
and enjoy a complimentary piece of
cake or apple pie and a cup of coffee.
“I started this for my husband
Chuck,” states Ann. “He is a Vietnam
veteran and came home at a time when
service men and women were more
likely to be harassed than honored for
their service. The more I thought about
it the more I felt we should expand it
and use it as an opportunity to honor
all who had served, regardless of the
time and in a very small way say
‘Thank you’.”
Mercer Bush, a Marine veteran, who
was one of many veterans who dropped
in for cake and coffee at Ann’s noted, “I
am glad we have a day to honor all vet
erans. We are proud of all who have
served and to whom we owe our free
doms. We need to especially remember
and honor those who paid the ultimate
price. We just cannot do enough to
honor their memory.” Concerning Ann’s
Deli he noted that she honors veterans
every day. “Just look at the deli and you
will see all the service flags as well as
pictures of veterans from Forsyth who
have served in all branches of service.
Not only does she honor veterans on
Veterans Day but all year long!”
Ann’s Deli is part of a growing move
ment to honor those who serve. There
are groups who on a daily basis seek to
greet members of the Armed Forces as
that return from Iraq and Afghanistan
Just as the popularity of “Have a good
day” has grown the popularity of greet
ing service people with “Thank you for
your service” is on the rise.
