Farm safety saves lives
Farmers are engaged
in one of the most haz
ardous of all occupa
tions year round, but as
harvest season begins a
new danger emerges -
roadway collisions
involving farm equip
ment and vehicles.The
National Safety Council
estimates some 15,000
collisions involving
farm vehicles occur on
U.S. roadways each
year. Farm equipment
roadway collisions
cause an average of 94
fatalities each year
according to the U.S.
National Traffic Safety
Administration’s
Fatality Analysis
Reporting System.
“Rural roadway safe
ty is a concern for farm
ers and their families
and should be a concern
for anyone else who
could potentially share
the road with farm
equipment,” said Barry
Peters, Monroe County
Farm Bureau president.
“By following common-
sense care and caution,
motorists can reach
their destinations
safely, farmers can
move their harvest
equipment safely and
needless roadway
injuries and fatalities
can be avoided.”
Farm Bureau
encourages farmers
to be careful when
operating slow-mov
ing vehicles on main
roadways and
encourages motorists
to be alert and cau
tious when traveling
behind farm equip
ment. Most farm
equipment travels at
25 miles per hour or
less. A motorist trav
eling at 55 mph who
is a football field’s
length behind a vehi
cle going 25 mph will
close the distance in
only five seconds.
Farm equipment
should have slow
moving vehicle
emblems (SMV) on
equipment traveling
less than 25 mph
that are clearly visible.
Farm equipment opera
tors should use warning
flashers as well as sig
nal lights or proper
hand signals to indicate
to motorists their loca
tion and intentions in
advance of turns. SMVs
should be driven in the
right-hand lane as close
to the road’s edge as is
safe, not half on the
road, half on the shoul
der. Equipment opera
tors should not
encourage or signal
motorists when to
pass but should pull
over when it is safe to
allow traffic to pass.
Motorists are urged
to be patient when
traveling behind a
SMV. Equipment driv
ers may not be able to
move over to allow
you to pass. Don’t
quickly pass a slow-
moving vehicle on the
road. Only pass farm
equipment when it is
safe to do so, with
plenty of room to get
around and ahead.
Also, give SMVs plen
ty of space to make a
turn or stop, watch for
hand signals from the
driver of the vehicle
and be on the lookout
for small driveways
that the vehicle may be
turning into.
