BY RICHARD DUMAS
A fire damaged the back portion of a
home on West Johnston Street near Short
Street Sunday morning.
Homeowner Blanch Tanner said she has
no idea what caused the fire but said it
originated in the laundry room.
Tanner, who was in the house with her
husband Bobby and sister Kathy Kidd,
said she was awakened to smoke forming
about halfway through the house. She
said she went and got a fire extinguisher
but was unable to put out the blaze,
which had ignited behind her clothes
hamper.
When Tanner began to choke on the
smoke, she said they decided to call for
help. She said Forsyth and Monroe
County firefighters were "on my front
porch before we knew it." The firefighters
quickly extinguished the blaze.
Tanner said her home of 18 years suf
fered some significant smoke damage,
particularly to the ceiling and windows,
but she said she was just glad that no
one got hurt.
"I just want to thank the fire depart
ments for being so quick and so wonder
ful," Tanner said Monday. "The emer
gency crew was right there too. We're just
so fortunate in this county to have the
best fire and emergency units."
Tanner said her family is currently
staying in a motel, and she is unsure how
quickly they will be able to return to the
home.
The fire was the second significant fire
in a week to which local firefighters have
responded.
A camper was severely damaged by fire
at KOA Campground on June 6.
The Forsyth Police Department received
a call from a neighbor at about 5:41 a.m.
that a camper was ablaze near the front
of the KOA Campground complex.
Capt. A.J. Rollins's Forsyth crew and a
Monroe County Fire Department crew
responded to the fire at 5:43 a.m. and
quickly put the fire out. However, the
inside of the camper was almost totally
burned out
and virtual
ly every
item in the
camper was
destroyed.
The
camper was
unoccupied
at the time
because the
owner,
Floyd May,
had already
left for
work.
May, who
is from
Alabama, is
employed by
Zachry
Industrial, Inc. and was doing contract
work with Georgia Power at the time.
May said he has been in Forsyth since
Oct. 1.
Forsyth Fire Chief David Herndon said
the cause of the fire is undetermined, but
that the fire is "not suspicious."
Incidents
Numerous drugs
found during
Collier Road stop
A 34 year old
McDonough woman was
arrested and charged with
possession of Schedule I
and II drugs, possession of
drug paraphernalia, man
ufacturing Schedule II
drugs, DUI and failure to
maintain lane after a traf
fic stop on Collier Road on
June 1. According to the
incident report, at about
12:20 p.m., Dep. Sam
Leggett saw a black GMC
Jimmy in front of him veer
off of Collier Road several
times, so he initiated a
traffic stop. Leggett met
with the female driver and
noticed she was slurring
her words. The driver told
Leggett that she was on
her way to Monroe County
Jail to set up a Pay Tel
account for her husband.
Leggett suspected the
driver was under the influ
ence of some substance,
but did not smell alcohol.
Leggett asked if the driver
had any prescription medi
cine on her, and she
responded that she didn’t.
Leggett proceeded to ask
her if she had any contra
band in her car to which
she responded no and then
told him that he could look
and see. The driver said
that Henry County had
searched her car recently
and subsequently arrested
her husband. She then
asked Leggett if he wanted
to move her car to a loca
tion out of the road.
Leggett told her to pull
her vehicle into a parking
lot 200 yards ahead. Sgt.
Davis arrived on the scene
to assist Leggett. Leggett
then searched the driver’s
vehicle and found a red
plastic device used to cut,
crush and store pills. The
driver told the officers that
it was her husband’s, and
that he used it to crush
Roxycodone. Leggett con
tinued to search the car
and found several plastic
straws with powdery
residue in them. Leggett
then asked the driver
when the last time she
snorted Roxycodone was to
which she replied that it
had been several days.
Sgt. Davis then found
Xanax and Roxycodone in
her purse. According to the
report, the driver then
failed several sobriety
tests. The driver agreed to
take a blood test, and
Leggett warned her that
bringing contraband to the
jail is a felony. The driver
then told Leggett that she
had a straw full of crushed
Roxycodone in her pants
leg that she had planned
to snort after she finished
speaking to her husband’s
probation officer. Upon a
more thorough search of
the vehicle, Leggett discov
ered more than 17 Xanax
bars, six generic Xanax
pills, 64 Roxycodone pills
and three Lorotabs. The
driver was taken to
Monroe County Hospital
for blood work and then
transported to Monroe
County Jail.

their home by the neigh

According to the incident
report, at about 4:52 p.m.
on May 27, Sgt. Michael
Clay met with a male
Criswood Drive resident.
The man said the power
went out at his home at
about 6 p.m. the previous
day due to a storm. As a
result, the man said he
and his wife went outside
and sat on their porch.
The man said his wife
went back inside, and he
walked around to the front
of the house to see if the
power had returned to
other houses in the subdi
vision. According to the
report, a short time later,
he heard his wife scream
ing inside. The man said
he found his wife on the
floor with a dog on top of
her. The man told Clay his
wife had left the back door
open to let air in when the
neighbor's dog intruded
and began attacking their
dog in the kitchen. He said
his wife attempted to sepa

Two men arrested
after burglary on
Hwy. 42 North
Two 18-year-old black
Forsyth men were each
arrested and charged with
burglary after a man rec
ognized them when he saw
them breaking into a Hwy.
42 home on June 3.
According to the incident
report, at about 2:20 p.m.,
Sgt. Michael Hull went to
a Hwy. 42 North home in
reference to a burglary.
The male homeowner said
when he came home from
work a male relative of his
neighbors told him he had
witnessed two young men
breaking into his house.
The homeowner showed
Hull the back door, where
someone had pried open
the sliding door by break
ing the lock. The relative
told Hull he was visiting
nearby family when he
heard the homeowner's
dog barking. He said he
walked down to check on
the dog and saw two black
males he recognized at the
rear of the home trying to
break in. He said he
hollered at them, and they
stopped and left the scene.
The relative told Hull the
identities of the two men
he saw. He said the grand
mother of one of the sus
pects lives behind the
homeowner. Both the
homeowner and the rela
tive told Hull that the two
men were driving a gray
Chevrolet Impala, which
was parked at the grand
mother's house earlier.
Hull went to the grand
mother's home, where a
man told him that the two
men had just left the
house in the same
Chevrolet Impala. The
man told Hull that the one
of the suspects lives off
Old Indian Springs Road.
Hull went there and spoke
with the suspect's mother.
Dep. Chad Beck then
stopped the Impala on
Hickman Road. Hull spoke
with the passenger, who
was very nervous and was
attempting to hide some
thing under a shirt on the
floorboard. The passenger
said he had been to the
recycling center to pick up
a friend. He said several
times he had not been to
any home on Hwy. 42
North. Hull then told him
he had been spotted at his
grandmother's house, and
he said, "Oh, yeah." Hull
then asked him if he had
been to any other homes in
the area, and he said he
hadn't. Hull then told him
he had been seen at the
homeowner's house, and
he said they just went over
there briefly to get some
thing. The driver initially
denied going to Hwy. 42
North as well, but eventu
ally told Hull the same
story.

glary. The female home-
owner said her female
cousin called her and said
there was a green two-door
truck parked at the home
owner's house, and a white
male was standing on the
porch. The homeowner
said her cousin asked her
if the truck was supposed
to be there, and she said
no. She said her cousin
drove back by the house
and saw the male running
from the porch to the
truck. She said her cousin
turned around again, and
the truck left the property
heading north on Hwy. 87.
The owner went to the
house and saw the front
door had been broken into.
The owner said two brown
padded porch chairs, a
