Jesus said to her, '7 am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies. - John 11:25
IN MEMORY
Gainer Bryan Jr.
Owned the Monroe Advertiser
March 12, 1922 - June 5, 2011
Gainer E. Bryan Jr. of
Lawrenceville, who grew
up in Forsyth and was
the former owner of the Monroe
Advertiser, died Sunday, June
5, 2011, at Gwinnett Medical
Center. He was born March 12,
1922 in Riddleville to Gainer
and Lila Smith Bryan. He grad
uated from Mary Persons High
School and then from Mercer
University and Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary.
During World War II he served
as a Naval officer aboard the destroyer USS Abele
which participated in the invasions of the Mariannas,
Iwo Jima, and Okinawa where the ship was sunk by
Japanese suicide planes. Gainer was author of two
books and editor of The Maryland Baptist and The
Gwinnett Daily News, during which time it won the
Georgia Press Association’s top award as the best daily
newspaper in Georgia.
Bryan’s widow, Mary Anna Bryan, said her husband
had grown up in Forsyth across the street from Tift
College. Mr. Bryan’s father had served as the training
union director for Georgia Baptists.
Gainer Bryan returned to Forsyth in 1976 to re-start
Monroe County’s old-time newspaper, the Advertiser,
which had gone out of business after the Reporter was
started in 1972. He opened the paper on Johnston
Street across from the current location of Jonah’s Pizza.
Mrs. Bryan said it was her husband’s dream to have
his own newspaper. Even after he suffered serious inju
ries in a car wreck, a Forsyth friend loaned him some
sturdy old Army boots and he was back cranking out
the Advertiser.
But Mrs. Bryan said the Reporter was too well-estab
lished by that time and they eventually had to give up
the Advertiser.
Bryan went on to retire as a stock broker with A.G.
Edwards & Sons. He was a deacon and teacher at First
Baptist Church Lawrenceville.
Mrs. Bryan said her husband fell and broke his hip
last Saturday, June 4 and never recovered. He had sur
gery on Sunday, June 5 but died around 9 p.m. of an
apparent stroke.
Along with his wife, Mary Anna Ogden Bryan, he is
survived by his sister, Grace Bryan Holmes; his children
Anna Cropley and husband Jeff; Sarah Spicher; John
Bryan and wife Shirley; and Bill Bryan and wife Tracy;
his grandchildren Rebecca Brady, Thomas, Daniel and
Anna Grace Stoy; Andrew, Christian and Nicholas
Spicher; John Lonzo Bryan; Mary Nicolette and Will
Bryan; and five great grandchildren. Funeral services
will be held Wednesday at Tom M. Wages Funeral
Home in Lawrenceville with visitation from 2-4 and
a service at 4. Those desiring may make donations to
First Baptist Lawrenceville 165 South Clayton Street,
Lawrenceville, GA 30046.
