Driver admits to
having marijuana
in his pickup truck
A 21-year-old white
Decatur man was arrested
and charged with posses
sion of marijuana after a
traffic stop on 1-75 South
on June 8. According to
the incident report, at
about 9:55 p.m., Dep. Sam
Leggett saw a blue Dodge
Dakota pickup truck fol
lowing a tractor trailer too
closely on 1-75 South.
According to the report,
the truck's tag was also
obscured by a tag frame
and had an improperly
affixed expiration decal.
Leggett stopped the truck
and met with the male
driver. According to the
report, the driver was very
apologetic and spoke very
quickly. When he handed
Leggett his license, his
hand was trembling.
Leggett asked the driver
to step to the rear of the
vehicle, and he seemed
very eager, almost relieved
to get out of the vehicle,
according to the report.
Leggett cited the driver for
failure to update the
address on his license for
60 days. While he was fill
ing out the citation, he
asked the driver why he
was so nervous and
whether he had any mari
juana in the truck. The
driver glanced at the
ground before quickly
answering no three times
and shaking his head. The
driver gave a similar
response when Leggett
asked about cocaine or
other contraband. He then
asked if he could search
the truck. The driver was
reluctant and said he was
in a hurry. He asked what
would happen if he denied
consent to search. Leggett
told him he would have to
call in the K9 unit, so the
driver relented. Leggett
then found two white pills
in a small plastic contain
er believed to be
hydrocodone. He also
found a small dried stem
from a marijuana plant.
Dep. King, who came to
assist at the scene, asked
the driver about the pills.
The driver said the pills
were a prescription med
ication for depression.
Leggett then told the driv
er he was going to conduct
a full vehicle search. The
driver finally admitted
there was a Rubbermaid
container under the rear
seat, which had a small
amount of marijuana.
Leggett told the driver
because he was honest
with him, he would not
charge him with prescrip
tion drugs not in original
container. The driver was
allowed to follow Leggett
to the Monroe County
Sheriffs Office, where he
posted a cash bond on pos
session of marijuana less
than one ounce.
