Thornton hasn’t directed a movie in over a decade and used
the time off to tour with his hlues band, “The Boxmasters”.
Ending his musical hiatus with this independently funded
movie, Thornton began filming in Cedartown in north Georgia
on June 22 and will continue filming for four days, according to
the Cedartown Standard. He and his crew are expected to be in
High Falls around June 14-15, according to the movie’s produc
tion company, JMC Production, as well as businesses and park
rangers in High Falls.
Anne Jones, who writes about High Falls for the Reporter,
said the feisty band of stars will fit right in.
"High Falls, long known for its own cast of characters, is now
attracting character actors," said Jones.
Thornton told Reuters news service that his movie is set in
1969 in Alabama. He says it is a comedy drama about human
relationships that examines the “randomness of life and death”
and how different generations view war.
“It’s about a guy who raises a family after his wife left him
for an Englishman and moved to England,” Duvall said, “When
the wife dies, she asks to be brought back to Alabama to be
buried, and at that point the character hasn’t seen her in 20 or
30 years. The two families — her original family she aban
doned and her English family — meet and then things get real
ly interesting.”
Historically, Jayne Mansfield was a Broadway actress from
the 1950s and 60s who was renowned for her large bosom and
her death in a tragic car accident in which she was decapitated
after being driven under a semi truck on a foggy night in 1967.
How the title plays into the movie is not yet known.
“Jayne Mansfield’s Car” will come to theaters in 2013.
Thornton’s big movies include “Slingblade”, “Bad Santa” and
“Friday Night Lights”.

Middle school students power up with camp
Film crew needs extras Jbly 1
BY LAURA CORLEY
Georgia Power teamed
up with Monroe County
middle schools for a five-
day summer camp from
June 5-10 to honor and
enlighten 19 seventh
graders chosen to attend
based on their attitudes,
an essay, classroom per
formance and mastery of
math and science.
“Georgia Power follows
these kids and maintains
contact [with them]
through high school, so
that if these kids want a
job with them they can
have it.” Banks Stephens
counselor Patricia
Hightower said.
Georgia Power chemists
talked and performed
hands-on experiments to
teach the students about
what really goes on at
Plant Scherer, while sev
enth-grade science teacher
Chad Sanders and eighth-
grade science teacher
Mark McCoy incorporated
lessons from the school
curriculum.
“We’ve been learning
what Georgia Power does
on a daily basis,” said sev
enth-grader Dustin
Ramsey.
With their eye goggles
on, students gathered
around long tables as they
built parallel circuits,
Hero motors and electro
magnetic motors. They
learned about the process
of purifying water, the
importance of safety when
dealing with chemicals
and how coal is used to
create energy.
Jerek Scott, Georgia
Power chemist, spoke to
the students and
explained the chemical
process of treating water
that comes from the
Ocmulgee River and Lake
Juliette. Students also
learned about the pH
scale, and the differences
between basic and acidic
solutions.
“We are fortunate to
have this in Monroe
County,” Hightower said.
The students are to be
rewarded with an iPod
Touch that will be given to
them on the last day of
camp after a tour of Plant
Scherer, according to
Hightower. The iPod will
contain all of the podcasts,
which are short digital
slide shows with pictures
and voiceovers, that the
students have created and
recorded themselves daily
during the camp.

Creekside Christian
Academy in McDonough is
joining Pine Crest Baptist
Church to film a Christian
movie, including a scene
at the Board of Education
on July 1. They need 300
extras to be there from 4

in their non-profit movie,
“The Solomon Bunch”.
The movie is set in the
fictional town of
Brookville, Ga. and is
about a kid, Ricky Reed,
and his friends on a jour
ney to a better under
standing of life and faith.
With comic relief, twists
and subplots, director
Jason Prisk expects the
movie to be a hit.
The cinematographer for
the movie, Bob Scott,
filmed the popular 2006
movie “Facing the Giants”,
as well as “Fireproof’ and
“Letters to God”. “The
Solomon Bunch” is pre
dicted to be an hour long
and will be suitable for
people of all ages.
The movie is expected to
be completed by spring
2012 and will premier on
Easter Sunday. Prisk said
that there will be a special
on national television and
that they have already
begun organizing the dis

This newspaper re

edition that Mary Per
sons’ scores on the
graduation tests were
better than last year
and above the state
average in all categories. Now the state has released the data by individual high school in
Middle Georgia and locals are noting that Mary Persons’ rising seniors ranked No. 2 among
