Ivy Doyce Knight
Ivy Doyce Knight, 72, of Juliette passed away on June
14, 2011.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Brake Knight; chil
dren, Tommy (Peggy) Knight, Sandy (Perry) Cook and
Derrick (Christy) Knight; grandchildren, Justin Knight,
Cassie and Candice Cook, Christian and Calen Knight.
He was predeceased by a grandchild, Lindsay Knight.
Memorial services were held at Bethany Baptist
Church in Bolingbroke on Friday, June 17, 2011.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethany
Baptist Building Fund or to the donor’s favorite charity.

passed away June 19,
2011 at Spalding Regional
Medical Center. He was the
brother of Darrell Smith of
Monroe County.
Funeral services for
Maj. Smith will be held
Thursday, June 23, 2011
at the Chapel of Harwell
Funeral Home with Dr.
David McCoy and Rev. Craig Holmes officiating.
Interment will be held at the Covington City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from
6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2011.
Maj. Smith was from Covington and was born Aug.
9, 1935 to Flora Smith and Master Sergeant Dennis
Alexander Smith, a career soldier who served in the 2nd
World War.
Major Smith graduated from Newton County High
School in Covington, in 1952 and attended Emory
University for 2 years before going to work for the FBI
in 1954. He married his wife the former Tessie Campbell
of Stumptown, W.Va. in 1956 .
Major Smith was drafted into the US Army in 1957
and served over 20 years, retiring in 1977 as a Major
in the Ordnance Corps and subsequently retired from
Lockheed Martin in 1999. He continued his schooling
while in the service and earned 2 bachelor degrees,
one in Business Administration, and one in Technical
Management from Athens College, Athens, Ala. He
also attended the Florida Institute of Technology work
ing on a Master’s degree. While in the Army, he served
tours of duty in Germany, Greece, Turkey, Thailand
and Vietnam as well as tours all over the United States.
His primary assignments in the Army were in Program
Management, Procurement, Nuclear Weapons, Missiles
and Ammunition. Among the awards and decorations
received while serving in the Army were the Legion of
Merit, the Meritious Service Medal, 2 awards of the
Joint Service Commendation Medal, 2 awards of the
Army Commendation Medal, numerous service awards
and several foreign decorations from the governments of
Thailand and Vietnam. After retiring from the Army in
1977 he went to work in the aerospace industry where
he held senior management positions with the Raytheon
Company in Huntsville, Ala. and with Lockheed Martin
at Redstone Arsenal, Ala., Orlando and Ocala, Fla., and
finally as Plant Manager of the Lockheed Martin Pike
County Operations in Troy, Ala. During his employ
ment with Lockheed Martin, he was twice named to
the top 100 employees in the company, and in 1995 was
named Lockheed Martin Manager of the Year. During
his tenure at Lockheed Martin Pike County Operations,
his facility received numerous Department of Defense,
Industry, and State recognitions including: Industry
Weeks “Top 10 Plants in America”, The Alabama
Quality Award, The Alabama Teaming Award, The
Department of Defense Industrial Security “Cogswell”
Award, and many other awards in Production, Safety,
Quality, Security, and Recycling. He retired from
Lockheed Martin in 1999. He was very proud to have
been named “Pike County, Ala. Citizen of the Year in
1996 by the Troy Citizen Newspaper, and “Who’s Who’s
in Aerospace” in 1997. He served as a member and
officer of the Pike County, Alabama United Way, the
Pike County Chamber of Commerce, and served on the
Alabama Governor’s Commission on Aerospace, Science,
and Industry. Smith was very proud to have been
associated with the Boy Scouts as both a boy and as an
adult leader. He had over 40 years of service in the Boy
Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout in 1952 and
being awarded the coveted “Silver Beaver Award” as an
adult in 1962.
Major Smith relocated back to the Georgia area in
January 2003 and attended People’s Baptist Church
where he served as a Deacon and taught a Men’s
Sunday School Class.
Major Smith is survived by her and two sons; Dennis
in Whitman, Mass., and Darrell of Monroe County. He
is predeceased by his son David who was killed in an
automobile accident in 2007.
In addition to his wife and sons, Major Smith is sur
vived by his brother David Smith of Covington, three
sisters, Mary Ella Bruce, Karlean Hester and Jean
Brizzi of Covington, three granddaughters, Stephanie
Smith of Jackson, Samantha and Nicole Smith of
Whitman, Mass., and two grandsons, David and Douglas
Smith of Orlando, Fla., a great grandson, Nolan Jones
and a great granddaughter, Lila Davies, both of Jackson.
Harwell Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Glynn Doster
June 2,1937-June 16, 2011
Mr. Glynn Doster, age 74, of Carrollton, Ga. passed
away Thursday, June 16, 2011. He was born June 2,
1937 in Forsyth to the late Clarence “Big Daddy” Doster
and Rosa Mae “Big Mama” Smith Doster.
Mr. Doster retired from the Southern Bell Company
as a switching manager after 45 years of service.
Following his retirement he worked for a number of
years as a consultant with Bell Labs. He was a member
of North Point Baptist Church and served his country
as a member of the US National Guard. He was pre
ceded in death by his son, Anthony Vaughn Graham
and a sister, Rose Alice Fite. Survivors include his wife,
Cherry Greene Doster; children and spouses, Bill and
Cheryl Graham of Dallas, Greg and Tammy Doster of
Temple and Carmen Horsley of Whitesburg; sisters,
Mary Emiley Butler of Snellville, Thelma Sheffield
of Fitzgerald, Judy Ogletree of Marietta, and Martha
Doster of Messa, Az.; brothers, John Robert Doster of
Snellville and George Doster of Dacula; also 12 grand
children, 9 great grandchildren, and a number of nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were held June 18, 2011 at Martin
& Hightower Heritage Chapel with Rev. Rodney Agan,
Rev. Champ Agan and Rev. Larry Jackson officiating,
and a reading by Mrs. Agnes Doster. Interment followed
in Carroll Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers were Derek Doster, Bobby Ogletree, Bert
Ogletree, Patrick Ogletree, Scott Sheffield, David Fite
and James Fite. Honorary pallbearers were Sons of the
Confederate Veterans.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home, 760 Pollard
Blvd. SW, Atlanta, Ga., 30315.

Danny Ray Walker
July 27, 1947 - June 14, 2011
Mr. Danny Ray Walker of Forsyth died Tuesday, June
14, 2011. Funeral services for Mr. Walker were held
Friday, June 17, 2011 in the Chapel of Sherrell Funeral
Home with Mr. Rudy Mangham and Mr. Johnny
Del Valle officiating. Interment was in Pepperton
Cemetery.
Mr. Walker was born July 27, 1947 in McDonough to
the late Clarence and Evelyn Wilkes Walker. He loved
people, enjoyed selling produce, gardening and spending
time with his family.
Mr. Walker is survived by his wife, Rita James
Walker of Forsyth; daughter and son-in-law, Dana
and David Buice of Forsyth; son and daughter-in-law,
Darius and Dana Walker
of Jackson; two sisters,
Carol Burnnett of Madison
and Sue Ellen McCarty of
Forsyth; brother, Roger
Walker of Madison; three
grandchildren, Brittany
Dentler, Aleia Maddox and
Tyler Walker; great-grand
son, Houston West; several
nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by
four sisters and two broth
ers.
