Reconciliation House marks
Independence all month

W fe as a nation celebrate a day of
what we declare as Indepen
dence Day. The fourth of July
because that is the day the De
claration of Independence was
signed. It all started over two hundred years
ago and we are still not independent. We can
never be independent of God. He is “how we
move and live and have our being.” “He is the
Rock on which we must stand all else is sinking
sand.” What I am saying is our real independ
ence will come when we are de
pendent on God for everything. We
can declare independence but at
taining it however is quite differ
ent. A well know successful exam
ple of a declaration of Indepen
dence is the statement “Not my
will but your will be done.” Of
course we know that anything but
His will brings confusion and
sometimes even what is or looks
like great disaster.
Independence Day is nearly
here on the calendar but what about in
our lives, in our communities or country?
Maybe we can help with this quest by
remembering one of the most quoted
statements of our country’s Declaration of
Independence. ”We hold these truths to
be self-evident, that all men are created
equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator (God) with certain unalienable
rights, that among these are Life, Liberty
and the pursuit of happiness.” How do we
show these truths to be so? Ensure that
these rights are understood from the
Creator’s truth the Word of God (bible)
says “I am the way the truth and the
Life” so life attempted without Him is not
life at all. Liberty is impossible without
God “Where the Spirit of the Lord is
there is Liberty” anything else would be
giving liberty to the flesh and corruption.
The pursuit of happiness, happiness is
what happens to you but the “Joy of the
Lord is your strength “. As these truths
are defined as God intended it to be
understood when this declaration was
written and we as a nation learn to
depend on our Creator not ourselves than
we will see true independence not only on
the fourth of July with fireworks but with
our works from God influenc
ing our world around us.
During the month of July
Reconciliation House shows
up to one hundred (twelve to
eighteen year old) Children of
Prisoners how to have Fun in
the Son (Jesus). The true way
to freedom/dependence on
God, with an ending ceremo
ny of forgiveness, we go on a
pursuit to let go and let God
releasing our unforgiveness
and issues of life to God at the foot of a
cross with the help of some helium and
balloons. At the beginning of a beautiful
scenic trail we set out on. As we walk this
trail we speak of the metaphor we just
experienced to be the beginning of our
true independence and freedom in God as
we forgive He forgives us and with every
step we talk about God’s faithfulness as
we take this journey to do and see His
will done in our lives.
