Monroe deputies train to stop fugitives
BY LAURA CORLEY
Twelve Monroe County Sheriff’s office
deputies were certified to perform a PIT
(Pursuit Immobilization Technique) on
July 1 at the training center. The PIT
maneuver, as explained by Officer
Gregg Phillips, is only used as a last
resort as a way to stop a pursuit. It
causes the car to spin and come to a
stop without leaving the roadway.
Phillips said he has used the technique
five times in 10 years and one of the
times happened in Monroe County.
In addition to the PIT maneuver, the
deputies also learned the “spin and pin”
and “rolling roadblock” techniques
which are used to stop pursuits and
envelope the offenders while causing
minimal damage to the vehicle and per
son.
Instructors included Lee Perkins from
the GSP, Bruce Stanford from the Ga
Police Academy, Mike Sweat from
Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and
Officer Greg Phillips from the Monroe
County Sheriff’s Office.
The 13 deputies certified were Chris
Landers, Holly Martinage, Cecilia
Brayboy, Daniel Ruiz, Travis White, Jeff
Wilson, John Thomas, Lawson Bittick,
Gwen Maddox, Troy Copelan, Arthur
Pritts, Stacey Penamon, and JR Harper
(Ga Police Academy). The instructors
were Bruce Stanford and Mike Sweat.
