Forsyth group gives $83,000 to boost wildlife
BY TERRY W. JOHNSON
A t its annual meeting held recently in
Forsyth, The Environmental Re
sources Network (TERN) awarded
the Georgia Nongame Wildlife Sec
tion (NGWS) $83,518. The money
will be used to fund 17 nongame wildlife conser
vation projects.
TERN is the
friends group for the
Georgia
Department of
Natural Resources
Wildlife
Conservation
Section. Its primary
objective is to raise
funds for the work
unit. The
Forsyth-based
nonprofit organi
zation was founded 21 a little more than 2
decades ago by Monroe County resident
Eva Persons. Since its inception TERN
has raised more than $810,000.
These funds have played an integral part
in the success of the Nongame Wildlife
Conservation Section. Unlike any other
state agency, the Nongame Section receives
no state tax dollars. It is funded by the
donations to a voluntary state income tax
checkoff, the sale of hummingbird and
eagle license tags, Federal grants, contribu
tions the annual Weekend For Wildlife
and TERN.
The Section is charged with the daunt
ing task of managing over 90 percent of the
state nongame wildlife resources — those
animals that are not fished, hunted or
trapped. This dizzying array of critters
include everything from tiny ruby-throated
hummingbirds, to bald eagles, indigo
snakes, sea turtles and whales. If that isn’t
enough, all of the state’s native plants have
been included under the Nongame umbrel
la. This is an awesome responsibility for
the Georgia Wildlife Resources Division’s
smallest section.
Each spring TERN meets in Forsyth to
decide which projects it will fund during
the coming year. Unlike most organiza
tions, each TERN member attending the
meeting votes on which will be financed.
The amount of money allocated is dictated
by how much the organization raised the
previous year.
The Nongame Section submits a list of
projects that need funding to the TERN
membership. As is always the case, the
needs of the Nongame Section outstrip the
money available for allocation.
This year, when the votes were tallied,
the TERN membership voted to fund a
broad spectrum of projects that will enable
nongame biologists to better manage
wildlife habitat, survey nongame popula
tions, enhance nongame wildlife conserva
tion education efforts and foster the appre
ciation of our precious nongame resources.
Throughout its history, TERN has made
conservation education a high priority. As
such it was no surprise that the conserva
tion group voted to financially support 5
education projects. TERN will once again
fund the highly popular Give Wildlife a
Chance Poster Contest. This annual con
test is open to students grades K-5. Each
year students are challenged to create
posters reflecting a different nongame con
servation theme. Winning posters are fea
tured in a full color poster or calendar that
is sent free of charge to state’s elementary
schools.
Funds were also allocated to help support
ProjectWild. This national conservation
education initiative trains teachers in ways
to can seamlessly blended conservation
education in into their classroom activities.
This year TERN will also fund an
Outstanding Teacher Award. This honor is
bestowed on a teacher that has done an
outstanding job of teaching wildlife conser
vation.
Three projects designed to maintain and
enhance nongame wildlife habitat were
also selected for funding. This money will
be used to maintain and enhance critical
wildlife habitats throughout the state.
Wildlife surveys are vital to the manage
ment of any wildlife species. Biologists
need to know where and how many ani
mals populate in an area before they can
manage for them. Realizing this, TERN
members voted to purchase equipment
that is needed to survey a variety of
nongame species including shorebirds, rare
mussels and mammals.
One of the rarest animals in the state is
the diminutive bog turtle. In the Peach
State it lives in only a handful of locations
in North Georgia. This year TERN will
provide funds to develop a bog breeding
facility. Bog turtles raised at the facility
will be released into the wild.
TERN also chose to fund project designed
to enhance the appreciation of nongame
wildlife. One of the most popular of these
projects is the Youth Birding Competition.
Each year the number of youngsters partic
ipating in this competition grows by leaps
and bounds. On a spring day in 2012
teams of young birders will scour the state
trying to find and identify as many birds as
possible in a 24-hour period. Prior to the
competition the teams and taught bird
identification skills by volunteer mentors.
A few years back the Nongame Conservation
Section produced and released a CD contain
ing the calls of the state’s frogs and toads. The
supply of the CD has been exhausted. TERN
funds will be used to update and produce a
new edition of this popular audio guide.
